Ramses's Story
BREED: GREAT PYRNESE & ST. BERNARD MIX
AGE: 1.5 YEARS
SEX: NEUTERED MALE
VACCINATED
Recap:
Since the beginning of January we have had Ramses at our rescue sanctuary... We ended up finding out about him as his owner was asking to surrender him due to contacting so many rescues that declined him due to his behavior and then being full. When we told them that we were quite busy ourselves.. they stressed the point that he did have a scheduled euthanasia a week from the day they told us... So we decided to drop everything and take him into our care..
Reason for surrender:
He has a bite history but no broken skin. And it was on his property and this person was a stranger to him...(this breed is called a LGB..LARGE GUARD BREED) This breed is bred to gaurd sheep and livestock... This was his natural instinct... His bowl was beside him..
His family was fearful of him hurting other people and did not think they could control him with strangers coming onto property.
When he started with us:
Since then we did have some ups and downs... He was very strong at resource guarding towards strangers or people he did not trust.. he treated almost every human like a threat to his valuables.. this probably came from the idea of him being tied up to a tree with his dish around him not a lot of socialization.
What we learned:
Pros:
Ramses is just a giant puppy... He loves to play... He LOVES snuggles and he values people's attention..
He's not a huge fetch fan but he still enjoys the idea of you throwing him a ball...
He is great at communicating with body language... If he is upset. He will keep space and growl...
Tail stops wagging and he will give you an odd stare...
This is ESSENTIAL for understanding him and letting him warm up to you...
As we said he's a giant puppy so we are correcting him jumping up on people and he is also using his mouth to nibble at people's wrists and butts...
But it is just him trying to direct you to play...
He accepts females dogs! And bows completely to let them know he would like to play...
Cons:
We have learned that he is not socialized with small children and does not trust them. We will not be adopting him out to anyone with children.
He hasn't had the life of positive reinforcement so he valued his bowl alot... Certain reward toys.. definately raw bones...
He was very upset with strangers at first.. he did corner our staff.. and intimate them.. but he has great redirection..
When entering the kennel gate he would growl and bark... We would ask him to sit. And back up and he would do that...
Once inside the kennel he would gauge us.. trying to figure us out...
We haven't socialized him with male dogs yet.
What has changed:
Since we started our correcting.. we have seen MAJOR changes in Ramses..
We have an e-collar on him for training purposes however we have not needed to use it as he corrects very well without it.
We slowly started introducing new people to him and he accepted them all!!
Not one bite on our property since we took him in... We have introduced him to plenty of people..
We believe we have reset his idea of humans in the past couple weeks...
He LOVES when people come to the kennel... We tried to show him how to value humans instead of finding them as threats..
All staff would feed him. Once they put the bowl down they would give him his space.. to show him we were never going to be that threat to his bowl.
He was accepting treats from staff hands..
The main handlers of Ramses on kennel property that have been working with Ramses one on one are able to fully touch his food and toys...
He just wants to be a normal dog but didn't learn how to be one...
What we think:
After weeks of introductions and correction,
We believe that Ramses is ready for adoption and meet and greets now! (Appointment only)
****We ask that anyone that is interested in Ramses, understands that he cannot be homes with children.. or male dogs (until he has been socialized)
Not recommending cats.
This dog is very large.. a condo or small apartment would not be logical for him...
Ramses needs patience and understanding... And someone with experience... As he can be intimidating due to his size.. and he will challenge you at first but you just need to show him you are the boss.****
however he is a giant snuggle bug when he learns to trust you. And once he does... You are his person ??
(Important note.. there are no exceptions and we have reference checks and home screening..
