Rags (D25-195)'s Story

Meet Rags!

With his gentle nature and soulful eyes, Rags is the kind of companion who quietly works his way into your heart. This sweet 5-year-old Bichon Frise weighs just 9.3 pounds and may be a little reserved when meeting new people, but with patience and kindness, his affectionate personality begins to shine. He enjoys playing with his toys, never says no to a tasty treat, and gets along well with other dogs. A calm canine companion would likely help him continue building confidence as he settles into home life.

Rags is looking for a foster-to-adopt home while he completes treatment for a severe case of heartworm disease. Because of the extent of his condition, he will need ongoing medical care, strict activity restriction, frequent visits to NMDR for monitoring and treatment, and a family committed to following his recovery plan every step of the way.

Rags is currently taking medication three times a day, and his future family must be comfortable administering his medications and following all veterinary instructions. He is also not yet neutered. Due to the damage caused by the heartworms, his neuter surgery carries increased medical risk and will be carefully timed and managed by NMDR's veterinary team once it is safe to proceed.

The good news is you won't be navigating this journey alone. NMDR will provide medical guidance, treatment, and support throughout Rags' recovery until he is ready to officially become a permanent member of your family.

Because of his medical needs, interested adopters must first qualify as foster volunteers, complete the foster approval process, live within one hour of our Peyton, Colorado facility, and participate in an in-person meet and greet to ensure Rags is the right fit for their home.

If you're ready to welcome a gentle companion who simply needs a little extra care before beginning his next chapter, Rags is ready to meet you. Complete a foster application on our website to get started.
------
Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

National Mill Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
At NMDR, we use a welcoming, conversation-based adoption process! We look at every applicant as a partner, offering honest education about our dogs' needs so you can make the best choice for your lifestyle. We generally do not deny adoptions based solely on yard size, housing type, adopter age, or having other pets. Because many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, we maintain a few firm safety and mission-aligned policies: Spay/Neuter Requirement: To help end the cycle of irresponsible breeding, all resident dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered. Homes with Children: Many of our dogs had limited socialization before rescue. Older kids are often a great match! Homes with younger children are considered individually based on the dog’s needs and the adopter’s experience with home management. Companions Only: Our dogs are adopted strictly as indoor family companions. Out-of-State Adopters: You are welcome to apply, but you must travel directly to the specific shelter housing the dog (in CO or MO) to complete the adoption. We do not ship or transport dogs. A Supportive Safety Net: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes a match isn't perfect. We discuss long-term safety nets with all adopters, and if a placement doesn't work out, we welcome our dogs back with zero judgment. Fees: Adoption fees vary by age and directly offset the extensive veterinary care, dental work, and rehabilitation each dog receives before adoption. Ready to meet your new best friend?
