South Coast Humane Society - the real one works together with MULTIPLE rescues to help dogs that find themselves in the system through no fault of their own to find homes.
My good Friend and Rescue Partner KATY at San Francisco Animal Care and Control asked me to help "PUPPY." This is what she told me and why I knew I needed to bring him to SCHS:
Puppy is not a puppy - he's an eight year old shepherd / something else mix. Maybe Lab? Maybe chow? Maybe.. a unicorn? Whatever it is - this dog is really something good and we absolutely adore him.
Puppy came into our shelter a few weeks ago when his senior dad was hospitalized. We held Puppy for his custody period and then actually extended his hold in the hopes that dad would get out of the ICU and be able to come back for his beloved dog. Unfortunately - dad is heading into hospice and will likely be passing away soon.
Puppy's dad was despondent that he was unable to come get him and tried desperately to arrange for his brother to come out to SF to get Puppy and drive him back to his home up north in Seattle. Unfortunately, brother found out that he can't have a dog where he lives, so that plan is out the window. Puppy's dad was devastated and his dying wish is for his dog to find a good home.
So you can see a little bit why this keeps me up at night! Especially because Puppy is a good dog. He has been raised with love and care for the past eight years and it shows. He is, simply put, nice. He greets all people with soft eyes and gentle wag of his tail. He loves to be held and hugged, and his idea of the perfect day is a leisurely walk, a romp with a dog friend, and sitting back with his person taking in the sights and sounds and watching the world go by. He is remarkably well mannered and well adjusted - gentle on leash, housetrained, polite, well trained, affable and easygoing. You can feel the love that his dad poured into him; he was someone's pride and joy and desperately wants to be that again.
Every time I pass by Puppy's kennel, he picks up his favorite plush toy and stands at the kennel gate all hopeful and waggy. It is breaking my heart. This sensitive, intelligent, snuggly wonder of a dog is so deserving of a good retirement after all the years he was his dad's faithful companion. This case has me messed up! And usually it's the neglect and abuse cases that get me. But this dog did everything right in his life, and so did his dad, and his story shouldn't end here because of crappy circumstances in his dad's life. You know? This dog did nothing to deserve becoming homeless and orphaned. None of them do, obviously, but this feels like if one of my dogs ended up at the end of the road at a shelter - you just don't see these ones coming. And I think that's why it hurts.
