Please read full bio

STATS, OVERVIEW: Pua is a 4 year (as of 2026) old spayed Catahoula female mix, up to date on vaccs, HW tested Negative and on prevention. Her weight is 55 pounds. Fed twice a day and no health issues owner is aware of. She is crate broke to an open wire crate, totally house broke, she is pretty good on leash unless distracted by hunting instinct. She is easily redirected and back on track. She is dog selective if slow introductions but other dogs seem to frighten her and make her unsure. She might accept a respectful, playful male dog if slow intro.. No small dogs and no cats.. she has prey drive like many good Catahoulas do. She has been good at vets, a little nervous but they did not have to restrain her. Nail trims, she allows it but she has to be eating treats, for it to be ok and while she is nervous.. treats or food would be the key to getting it done. She has white and black mixed nails which white ones are easier to trim. She is an alert dog, but not a dog that is talkative and barking all the time. She is uneasy with strangers being familiar with her when they visit, so she is crated. There have been two bite incidents, please read all of this bio for full details on that. We feel she is just insecure and it was not aggression. More territorial and fear based. Could have been avoided. Probably no children. She is a insecure dog that needs reassurance, and is protective of her owner and home. She should be left outside supervised only so she does not try to escape or dig holes in frustration. She is not a fence scaler but usually it is after small prey that tries to go under the fence. She likes chewing on Antlers and bones but is not ball or toy motivated. Not unusual for working breeds. She is ok in the back seat of a vehicle and lies down and settles down for a nap usually. She is not a water dog. She is not terrific on recall, especially if there are scents on the ground. Best if she is on a long line. She isn’t terrible but owner says he won’t risk it. She chases birds and all sorts of stuff. Reason for rehoming her is problems with other dogs in living conditions with family members and owner cannot reside on his own at this time. Too many dogs in the same household, and too many bosses. Owner has had her for two years. So living conditions are new for owner and it is not working for her or for them. They have told him she has to go. Sooner the better for all concerned. Foster with intent to adopt or adopt..we will screen and consider options.

HISTORY: Owner got her about two years ago from a shelter in Hawaii. She had not been socialized much. She was flown back to the states. That probably scared her a bit for she is not a very secure dog but that can be worked on. HCLDRDoes behavioral help free.

GOOD: She is extremely loyal to her owner and will cuddle and lie down once she bonds with you. She gets excited when owner comes home,.. she is beside herself with joy and lets it be known. She loves giving kisses, it is her form of deep affection. She groans in happy contentment and it is so cute when she does it. It is like relief and happiness that just has to escape. She is food motivated and will easily train for treats and has not to date become a counter surfer. She is smart and likes to learn new things. Once she gets comfy with another dog she will wrestle with them. So far she has only had a female dog friend. She does like a male dog just fine in the home. One of the few.

BAD: In a new house she used to have an accident in the house but it usually is a nervous thing and she has not done it recently And it was only once and twice. She was just nervous and scared. Nothing seriously bad about her.

UGLY: Two incidents where she nipped, no blood, just a pinch and warning. One was a female friend entering the house. Pua met her at the door, and nipped at her T shirt. She called off easily. It was more of a warning that.. this is my owner’s home and my job to protect. ( it is not a good idea for any dog to meet strangers at the door in JCLDR’s opinion.. too high stimulus) Second bite was pretty much the same situation and it was a family member, owner’s brother.. she pinched him on his thigh. She just needs to be crated and let out once she is used to someone being there and strangers should respect her space and let her get friendly on her own timing. An insecure dog often reacts this way or can.mIt can be,worked, with nd she can stay in her safe den...crate when visitors come...nothing wrong with that.
