Prissy LaRue's Story
MEET PRISSY LaRUE

Prissy LaRue is a little bit like Bambi standing at the edge of the woods.

She's gentle, observant and cautious when meeting new people or stepping into unfamiliar situations. But Prissy isn't afraid of life, and she isn't fragile.

She simply approaches it carefully.

Once Prissy decides you're safe, another little dog begins to emerge. She's affectionate, playful, cuddly and wonderfully kissy-faced. She loves being petted and rubbed on, happily licks hands and arms, plays with her canine buddy, and then settles beautifully beside her person on the couch.

Prissy wants to lay her trust in her human's hands.

She just places that trust carefully.

HER FIRST DAYS MATTER

Prissy is not the girl who should step off a transport van and be greeted with a huge Gotcha Day production. For her, the celebration comes later.

Her first days should be quiet and predictable. Give her gentle voices, a simple routine and room to observe without pressure. Let her learn where she is, who her people are and that she's safe.

We're not trying to protect Prissy from the world.

We're protecting a sensitive dog's first impression of a completely new life.

Don't measure the success of her first day by whether she's playing or climbing into everyone's lap.

Measure it by whether she begins to exhale.

Once she does, Bambi starts stepping into the clearing, and you'll meet the playful, affectionate, kissy little couch companion waiting underneath that initial caution.

All adopters receive our The First 24 Hours transition guidance. With Prissy, following it will be particularly important.

DOGS, CHILDREN & CATS

We were originally told Prissy “doesn't do well” with other dogs. That has not been our experience.

She shares an outdoor run with Twix, an unrelated male of similar size, and they genuinely play together. She's also been peaceful around calm dogs inside the home.

Prissy can become frightened by a dog who rushes or intimidates her, so we believe her best canine housemate would be friendly and socially appropriate, with thoughtful introductions.

Prissy has not been child-tested, but based on her temperament, we believe she could potentially do well with gentle, respectful children who won't overwhelm her.

She has not been cat-tested, but based on our observations, we recommend a home without cats or other small non-dog animals.

EVERYDAY LIFE & TRAINING

Prissy is playful without being chaotic and has a lovely off-switch. She enjoys activity but is equally happy curled up beside her person. She has not been an excessive or nuisance barker in her foster home.

She sleeps wonderfully in her crate and does well on leash for the walking she routinely does between the house, nighttime kennels and outdoor runs.

We've observed no food guarding, and she has shared food and treats appropriately with Twix.

Prissy has previously dug beneath an interior chain-link run. That behavior stopped after Dig Defense barriers were installed, but her adopter should provide secure containment and supervise her carefully while she adjusts to a new home.

HOUSE TRAINING

Because Prissy lives in a multi-dog foster environment, she doesn't have unrestricted house access every day, so we don't label her completely house-trained.

Her indoor behavior has been very encouraging. She's had only one potty accident here, which occurred when another dog badly startled her.

As with any newly adopted dog, Prissy will need a consistent potty schedule and patient guidance while learning the routine and signals of her new household. Based on what we've seen, we expect her to make that transition nicely.

HEALTH

Prissy is spayed, fully vaccinated, including DHPPL, rabies, and bordetella (kennel cough). She is heartworm-negative and on monthly Simparica Trio and Panacur. She is also microchipped.

THE “EMBARK CLAUSE”: Our Best Guess and Why

Unless a dog comes to rescue with DNA results, a known pedigree or reliable information about both parents, breed identification is ultimately an educated guess.

We're a rescue, not Embark.

Our best guess for Prissy is a Labrador Retriever / Pointer mix.

Her sleek black coat, expressive face and overall appearance put Labrador Retriever high on our list. Her approximately 40-pound adult size, lighter athletic build, narrower muzzle, white chest and delicately ticked toes make us wonder whether a smaller Pointer-type dog may also be somewhere in her family tree.

Could DNA surprise us? Absolutely. Mixed-breed genetics love doing that.

THE HOME WE WANT FOR PRISSY

Prissy doesn't need an unusually quiet home forever. She needs people capable of being quiet when quiet matters.

Someone who won't demand instant affection. Someone who understands that trust earned carefully can become extraordinarily deep. Someone who can see a cautious little dog standing at the edge of her new life and resist the urge to pull her into the clearing.

Just make the clearing safe.

Prissy will come.

And when she does, expect kisses. Lots of them.

NEXT STEPS

We're not simply looking for someone who wants a dog. We're looking for the right match for Prissy and a home where both she and her adopter can thrive.

If you think Prissy LaRue may be your girl, please contact:

Marty Reese
281-723-6142
marty.reese@sbcglobal.net

Prissy is fostered in Livingston, Texas. Approved long-distance applicants can meet her through a live FaceTime or Messenger video visit.

For long-distance adoptions, Byrdie Express is our preferred transport provider. We coordinate the reservation and transportation details, while the adopter pays Byrdie Express directly:

Kelly Byrdie
(940) 923-6089
byrdieexpress@gmail.com

Adopters may choose another reputable transporter. In that case, the adopter makes and pays for the reservation and coordinates directly with the provider. An additional fee may apply if we must arrange transportation from the foster home to the provider's designated pickup point.

Sometimes the dog who's been waiting for you... is waiting in Texas.

Your new best friend could be just one ride away!
