Porter's Story
Our Porter is a hoot — and this sweet guy has quite the story.

Before his rescue, Porter spent months living in total fear, constantly on the run and trying to survive on his own. Our friends at HARTT tracked him for months as he traveled nearly 30 miles on all four paws, too terrified to trust anyone and always searching for safety. Eventually, Porter settled in Anthem, where a kind homeowner began leaving him food and water under her carport.

Time was running short — everyone feared Porter would take off again. Thankfully, rescuers were finally able to bring him to safety using a large drop net. It was a traumatic experience, but it marked the beginning of a brand-new life for Porter.

Today, Porter can still be cautious when meeting new people, and understandably so. But underneath that careful nature is a funny, playful, incredibly sweet dog who has learned how to enjoy life. He has gained so much confidence and, most importantly, discovered joy and security. Porter has had many doggie friends and does well with respectful, dog social pooches.

Porter has been working closely with a trainer who describes him as having a somewhat primal personality — the same survival instincts that kept him alive on the streets. He is independent, intelligent, and thoughtful, always assessing new situations before fully relaxing. Porter may always carry a little caution with him, but he is deeply respectful of people and their space. Once he feels safe, his playful side shines through. He loves to play, play, play… and then happily curl up on the couch for chest rubs afterward.

The next step in Porter’s journey is finding a patient, dog-savvy foster or forever family with a calm, steady routine. Kindness, understanding, and patience are essential as Porter continues building trust and confidence.

Porter is about 5 years old and weighs around 50 pounds. He is truly a sweet, funny guy, and we like to joke that he’s become such a couch potato because he’s still recovering from all those miles he spent running in fear. Thankfully, those days are behind him now.

If you’d like to be part of Porter’s future, an application is a must.

https://povertyspets.org/application/

Once received, you will be contacted within 72 hours.
