Poppy Roux's Story

Meet Poppy Roux!

At approximately 50 pounds, Poppy Roux is the perfect medium-sized adventure buddy. With her soulful amber eyes, athletic build, and beautiful reddish coat, our best guess is that she's a Labrador Retriever and Carolina Dog mix—a combination that gives her the perfect blend of intelligence, loyalty, playfulness, and athleticism.

Some dogs seem to have all the luck. Poppy Roux wasn't one of them... at least not in the beginning.

Her story started on the streets of Louisiana, where she somehow managed to survive on her own before finally being brought to safety. Even then, life wasn't easy. She spent months waiting in a shelter from February through July, all while bravely undergoing treatment for heartworm disease. Through every needle, every medication, and every setback, Poppy Roux never stopped wagging her tail or believing that brighter days were ahead.

Then, the unimaginable happened.

Without warning, the shelter she called home was ordered to close its doors. In a matter of hours, countless animals faced heartbreaking uncertainty—transfer to another rescue, release back onto the streets, or euthanasia. Thanks to the partnership between the Bissell Pet Foundation and Furever Tails Animal Rescue, Poppy Roux was one of the lucky ones. She climbed aboard a transport bound for Michigan, leaving behind the only place she'd known for months and beginning the journey toward the life she had always deserved.

Today, Poppy Roux is proof that dogs don't dwell on yesterday—they simply embrace today with their whole heart.

She is quite possibly one of the happiest dogs you'll ever meet. Her tail seems to have a permanent wag, and she greets every day like it's the greatest adventure yet. Whether she's proudly carrying around one of her beloved stuffed animals, tossing toys into the air, zooming around the yard with her canine friends, or rolling over to offer her belly for rubs, Poppy Roux lives life with pure joy.

She absolutely ADORES toys—especially stuffies—and believes every home should have a well-loved toy basket waiting for her. She's playful, goofy, and full of enthusiasm, but once she's had a chance to burn off some energy, she's more than happy to settle in for snuggles... preferably curled up in bed right beside her favorite people.

Poppy Roux gets along well with other active dogs that enjoy a good game of chase, doesn't mind cats, and would do best with older, dog-savvy children who understand that her excitement sometimes gets the better of her. She has a habit of jumping up to say hello when she's thrilled to see you, but it's simply because she loves people so much and is eager to share her happiness. In fact, she is so athletic that when left unattended, she will jump a 4' fence, so she may be best on a tether if she is not under supervision.

She's crate trained, food and treat motivated, has a great understanding of house manners, and already knows some basic commands. She's incredibly submissive, often rolling onto her back to show her belly as if to say, "I'm your friend!"

After surviving life on the streets, conquering heartworm disease, enduring months of waiting, and escaping a shelter closure just in time, Poppy Roux has already overcome more than most dogs ever should.

Now, she's ready for the chapter she's been waiting for all along.

A family who will throw the toys, share the couch (and maybe the bed), laugh at her silly antics, and remind her every single day that she'll never have to wonder where she'll sleep or whether she'll be loved again.

Poppy Roux has survived. Now it's her turn to truly live!

If you're looking for a fun-loving, affectionate best friend with a heart as big as her smile, Poppy Roux is waiting to make your family complete—and to love you with every ounce of gratitude she has for the rest of her life.

Poppy Roux is:
Current on Bordetella, Distemper, and Rabies
Dewormed
Underwent Heartworm Treatment and is now Heartworm Negative
Receiving Heartworm and Flea Prevention
Microchipped
Spayed

ADOPTION FEE: SPONSORED

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS PET, PLEASE COMPLETE THE APPROPRIATE APPLICATION FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE HTTP://FUREVERTAILS.COM. We process applications ONLY - there is no guarantee that you will get a response to an inquiry.

Many of the animals in our foster program come to us with limited or unknown histories. We make every effort to evaluate each animal's temperament and behavior, including testing their interactions with other dogs, cats, and children (defined as individuals under the age of 18, when available). However, every animal is unique—just as every child and household environment is different.

While we strive to set both our foster animals and adoptive families up for success through thorough assessments and transparent communication, **we cannot guarantee any specific behavioral outcome**. Animals can be unpredictable by nature, and behavior may change in new environments or over time. OUR FOSTER ANIMALS ARE LIVING IN FOSTER HOMES AND TREATED LIKE FAMILY UNTIL THEY FIND THEIR OWN FUREVER FAMILIES. ADOPTION FEES ARE NECESSARY TO HELP US COVER VETTING COSTS FOR OUR RESCUED ANIMALS.
