What we do know is heartbreaking enough. Somewhere along the way, Polar suffered a devastating injury to his leg. Those who cared for him believe he may have been struck by a car. Injured, scared, and in pain, this young dog faced a difficult road ahead.<br/><br/>For an entire month, Polar remained in a veterinary clinic while doctors worked to save his leg and help him heal. Despite their best efforts, two of his toes had to be amputated. For most puppies, life should be filled with chasing butterflies, playing in the grass, and discovering the world. Instead, Polar spent weeks recovering from a serious injury.<br/><br/>Today, he has a slight limp, a lasting reminder of what he has been through. But that limp doesn't slow him down nearly as much as you'd think. His spirit remains strong, and he continues to move forward with the resilience that dogs seem to possess so naturally.<br/><br/>Now safe and surrounded by people who care about him, Polar is finally getting the chance to be what he should have been all along a happy puppy.<br/><br/>FOSTER UPDATE: Polar is housebroken. We had a couple of accidents the first day or two he was with us but none since. He walks wonderfully on a leash. Well, sort of, he doesn't really walk, he ambles, he moseys, he strolls. Urgency, Polar hasn't heard of it. If you want a buddy for power walks he's not the guy. He's food motivated and very smart. He's a Pyr which means he's also stubborn, but not too bad. Also, you'd never know that he had an injury to his leg. It doesn't hold him back and he regularly gets puppy zoomies and jumps all over the place. The only time I even notice is when he goes potty (his stance is not typical).<br/><br/>Polar is the most gentle soul. He loves everyone - women, men, kids, probably even aliens if given the opportunity. I have interacted with more people on our walks than I have with any previous foster. He just draws people to him. He would do great in a home with kids. He loves kids and is so gentle with them. He met a little 1 year old at the park and just very nicely sniffed and kept his distance.<br/><br/>Polar has already made a couple dog friends in the neighborhood. He loves other dogs and is so good with them. He just wants to play. Unfortunately, he's bigger than most of them. The best was when we met a 6 mo old Pyr mix and those boys got the chance to have a good play time. Polar would be perfectly fine as a solo dog, but he'd really like a dog friend. If that's not possible, he'd probably like to go to a doggy daycare to interact with other dogs. Not sure about cats but based on his overall personality my guess is that he'd be fine.<br/><br/>I joke that Polar missed the day at orientation about being a guardian breed. Pyrs are known for being "nocturnal" and barking at the slightest whisper of something. Polar did not get this vital piece of information. He loves everybody and everything. He gets upset when other dogs bark at him. The only time we've heard him bark is when he is mad at us because we aren't doing what he wants. And even then that is only a handful of times. If it were up to him he'd lay on you like a living weighted blanket.<br/><br/>But Polar is not perfect and is still a puppy. He is not used to a crate. He has an inclination to chew on things; RIP heating pad. He does not willingly get in a car. He will have to be picked up and put in. Once he's in he does okay. And this dog does not understand he is over 70 lbs and cannot just sit on your lap. He's getting better about respecting personal space.
