Pluto's Story
**Update - we have been inundated with applications and his caretakers have a friend interested in adopting Pluto, so we are no longer accepting applications for him.**

Pluto is a two-and-a-half-year-old loving, loyal companion looking for a fresh start after the heartbreaking loss of his owner in early June. His owner was a kind, older gentleman, and the two were inseparable. Pluto enjoyed 2 - 3 daily walks, daily trips to the dog park, and has excellent recall. He knows "sit" and "paw," and if you adopt Pluto, you'll also gain a wonderful community of people at the Dedham Dog Park who know and love him.

At home, Pluto loves to be by your side and is always up for a cuddle. He's dog-friendly and shares his space beautifully in his foster homes. He has also lived peacefully with a cat and guinea pig. Pluto thrives on an active lifestyle and loves playing fetch, exploring wooded trails, and has the stamina to keep playing long after the other dogs are ready to head home.

Pluto would do best with someone who is home most of the day or works remotely, as he's used to having his person nearby. He does experience some separation anxiety and may whine for about 30 minutes after you leave before settling down. He adores children and is often the dog happily soaking up attention or playing fetch with them at the park.

While Pluto gets along well with most dogs, he can be a bit bossy with puppies and may occasionally try to herd or nip them—a typical Australian Shepherd instinct. Fortunately, he has excellent recall and redirects easily. He has lived with older kids but has not lived with young children so we are looking for a home with kids 12 and up.

Pluto is currently carrying a few extra pounds, so we recommend a weight-management diet, along with his daily walks and playtime, to help him return to his ideal weight.

If you're looking for a loyal best friend to join you on walks, adventures, and cozy evenings at home, Pluto may be the perfect match. The first step in our adoption process is to fill out an adoption application here: medfieldshelter.com/adopt

If a dog is listed on our website, it is still available for adoption; however, there may be applications ahead of yours. We typically receive many applications for every dog we post. All adoption meetings are by appointment.

Our dog adoption fee is $450 for dogs aged seven months to seven years old, and $250 for dogs aged eight years and older. Every dog we place receives age-appropriate vaccines, is treated for worms, ticks, and fleas, tested for heartworm, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before adoption. We send each dog home with a collar and leash. Please fill out the adoption application if you would like to be considered for a dog in our care.

With few exceptions, dogs are happiest and well-behaved when they receive daily exercise and ongoing training, so we always prefer to place our dogs with families willing to commit to both.
