Petra's Story

This brave little girl started her life with such heartbreak and abuse. Her life started in St Lucia…. she had a mom and siblings. But Nobody will ever know what happened to them. She was all alone at no more than 10 weeks old scrounging for scraps, dodging cars, escaping more abuse…. but surviving, all alone.

When a slaps volunteer spotted her, she was petrified of everyone and everything. She could barely eat; quickly grabbing a scrap and disappearing into a hole by a stream.
She was finally trapped and went to the shelter; she weighed a mere 8 pounds. She has a scar across her mouth about 4” long and a burn and marks on her inner thigh. Her back leg has some
joint issues from an old injury also. But she is doing great and with a few supplements and medication she runs like a rabbit! She was probably hit with a machete across the face and hot oil thrown at her on her left leg, but nobody will know for sure.

She stayed at slaps for over a year in a 10X10 concrete pen; but finally safe and being cared for.
She was eventually adopted by someone in the US. However, the new owner worked long hours and could not provide the training and support she required. She became isolated from the world, not leaving the house. One day she got out by accident and ran away. She was missing for two days and nearly drowned by jumping into a river full of weeds and branches; avoiding people and everything that scared her in this big new world of hers.
She is now in foster care with Bruno Project Rescue. Her foster fur siblings help her with her confidence and to learn how to be a happy dog.
Petra has come a long way, but she still has a way to go. She will need a special, patient person who understands her and can spend time with her.

A quiet home with no small children is best as they are too loud and chaotic for her.

She is getting better with strangers but needs her space respected. She will curiously check out strangers with caution and will make friends if it can be when she is ready to.

She is making progress on leash but will need time to feel comfortable and safe with consistent short walks. She gets a little spooked with cars and loud noises but LOVES the leash walks! This is her joy; and with a huge smile will jump like a kangaroo at the sight of the harness. Once she is more comfortable and with practice, she will make a great walking or jogging partner as she enjoys a fast walk and has energy and the love of getting out exploring with her person next to her.

She loves dogs, bones and toys

She entertains herself and is a very smart girl.

She has mastered Crate and house training and has never had any accidents. she sleeps through the night until you come to greet her.

She loves her food. Breakfast is her favorite time of day and will stand on her back legs to show you her excitement for a good meal.

She has a lot of love to give and is learning how to trust people.
