Pepper 's Story

Pepper is a shy 3 year old Texan who came to Colorado to find her “forever” home. She was introduced to us as a Standard Schnauzer, but we think that she is a terrier mix with a lot of schnauzer in her background. She weighs in at about 28 pounds, so she is bigger than a Mini, but smaller than a normal Standard. She is a mix of black and brown fur.

We know nothing about her history before she showed up at the Texas shelter as an owner surrender. The previous owner gave no information, but shelter notes indicate that she may have been kept in a business location with a lot of customer traffic. She was very matted when she came into the shelter and cowered in the corner of her kennel until a volunteer sat down with her and showed her that people can be nice, and sometimes give treats!

While she is timid with strangers, she bonds quickly to a consistent loving human in her life. She asks for affection and petting from her foster Mom and loves to wander around the fenced in backyard, checking out all the wildlife scents. Pepper was reactive to men when in the shelter, especially when physically restrained, but was fostered in a home with a husband, wife and another dog. She is currently on anti-anxiety medication.

Pepper is afraid of the grooming clippers, so she has only been scissored to remove her mats. She is just learning commands like “sit” and “come.” She is house trained. She will potty outside when given a consistent schedule. She prefers that her foster Mom stay outside with her. She wants to please. Pepper would do best in an adoptive home with patient, experienced dog owners who are there most of the time, such as a retired couple or someone who works from home, and we think that she would benefit from being in a home with another well adjusted dog.

Pepper is spayed, she is up to date on her vaccinations (rabies, distemper and kennel cough), vet checked, heartworm tested negative and on preventative while in rescue, and microchipped.
