Pepper Ann D3291's Story
Pepper is a smart, affectionate, highly engaged dog who thrives with structure, activity, and a strong connection to her person. Once she trusts you, she will happily crawl right into your lap for all the love you're willing to give.

One of Pepper's biggest strengths is how trustworthy she is around the home. She is completely house-trained, has never been destructive, and does not chew things even when she is bored. She and her co-resident dog have free run of the house when no one is home, and Pepper tends to stay close to home rather than looking for opportunities to wander. She no longer needs to be kenneled, but still regularly chooses to relax in her open crate because it is a comfortable, safe space for her.

Pepper needs a home that can give both her body and her brain regular activity. When she is under-stimulated, that extra energy can turn into anxiety or some persistent requests for attention! That said, she isn't constantly on the go. Once her needs are met and she settles in, Pepper is very capable of switching off and happily napping for hours.

Pepper can be unsure of unfamiliar people and situations, particularly around her home, and may bark when something or someone new approaches. She does best with calm introductions at her own pace. Earning her trust may take a little time, but once you have it, she is an incredibly loving and devoted companion.

Pepper currently lives with another dog and has done well with him, though she wishes he wanted to play more! She is dog-friendly, but can be protective of her personal space at first and has a physical, enthusiastic play style. Another compatible dog could be a great fit with slow introductions, but she would also be happy as an only dog with plenty of connection with her people.

Pepper would be a wonderful match for someone who enjoys training, dog sports, outdoor adventures, or simply wants their dog to be an active part of everyday life. She has done some bird hunting and absolutely loves it. She has good recall, knows basic commands and "place" very well, and has good house manners. Her prey drive is manageable, and she lives peacefully alongside a flock of ducks separated by fencing.

Most importantly, Pepper is looking for a home without young children. She has lived with young kids and is loving and comfortable with them much of the time, but as she has matured, she has become increasingly nervous during certain close interactions with children under 4. An adult-only home, or potentially one with older, respectful children, would allow her to feel much more comfortable and secure.

Pepper isn't a low-key dog, but she also isn't looking for nonstop activity. She needs someone who appreciates her enthusiasm, gives her meaningful outlets for her energy and intelligence, and enjoys the very affectionate, connected dog she is once she feels secure. With structure and a strong bond with her person, we truly believe Pepper will thrive as the amazing dog she is.
