Penny's Story
Meet Penny
This sweet senior girl is safe in our care thanks to her incredible foster mom, Angelique, who advocated for her when she needed someone most. While we don’t know Penny’s full history, we do know she had been passed from home to home without ever receiving the medical care she needed and deserved.

Penny arrived with significant medical needs. She was unspayed, long overdue for a dental, and her wellness exam revealed mammary masses and possible cataracts. During her spay and mass removal surgery, veterinarians discovered two mammary masses and an ovarian mass. Thankfully, all were removed successfully, and we received wonderful news that the mammary tumors were benign. The ovarian mass was caught early enough that surgery is believed to be curative, and after consultation with an oncologist, no further treatment was recommended.

Despite everything she has been through, Penny’s spirit absolutely shines. Her foster mom shared, “Penny has decided I’m her person and is happiest when she’s touching me. She is quite spunky and very easy to love.”

Penny is estimated to be around 8 or 9 years old and has fully adjusted to life in her foster home, which includes multiple dogs and three teen children. She integrated easily into the pack and seems to do best with dogs who match her smaller size and moderate energy level. While she would likely enjoy a canine companion, Penny could also thrive as an only dog if her adopter is home often and willing to shower her with attention and companionship. Once Penny chooses her person, she forms a very deep bond and quickly becomes their tiny supervisor and shadow.

Penny is affectionate, opinionated, funny, and full of personality. She takes a little time to warm up, but once she feels safe, she becomes a total character. She has the cutest gummy bark due to only having a few teeth remaining after her dental, and she is not shy about sharing her opinions. While she enjoys cuddling, it is usually on her terms, though she always wants to be nearby and touching her favorite person whenever possible.

Penny enjoys neighborhood walks, exploring the yard, car rides (preferably on a lap), and occasional bursts of zoomies. She is an excellent leash walker and has very nice house manners. She is potty trained, sleeps soundly through the night, and tolerates a crate if necessary, though she would much rather be close to her people. She does not seem overly interested in toys, but she does enjoy engaging with her humans and being part of daily life.

Food is one of Penny’s greatest joys. She is a true foodie who loves mealtime, snacks, and social eating opportunities. Angelique jokes that Penny regularly supervises her throughout the day, making sure she is staying productive, avoiding bathroom bandits, and creating soft cozy places for Penny to relax.

Penny would do best in a calm, loving home with older children or adults who understand and respect small dogs. She does not enjoy being picked up unexpectedly and will let you know when she is uncomfortable. She is indifferent toward strangers and visitors, preferring to quietly observe rather than demand attention.

This resilient little girl has been through so much change in a short period of time, yet she continues to greet life with bravery, sass, and so much love to give. Penny deserves a forever home where she will finally be cherished, spoiled, and adored for the rest of her days.

Apply today!

BEED ESTIMATE: Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie)
GENDER: Female
APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 6 lbs
APPROXIMATE AGE: ~8 to 9 years old
COAT TYPE: longer coat that needs regular grooming.
ADOPTION FEE: $425
OTHER INFO: UTD on shots/spayed/microchipped/dental
LOCATION: Chantilly, VA

FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application.

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted.
