Pending Adoption - Zanet's Story

Socialization: Zanet is very shy with new people and needs time and patience to warm up to them. She is extremely wary of strangers and will avoid people she doesn't know. Once she gets to know you, she will be affectionate and cuddly, but she startles easily, and it is important to let her come to you in her own time and on her terms. She gets comfortable with women much more quickly than men, but she takes time to feel comfortable with all new people. Once she knows you, she does love a good couch cuddle though! Zanet is very good with other dogs - she is friendly, social and playful with other dogs and interacts extremely well with both large and small dogs. She loves playing with the other puppies at Rescue Ranch, but also plays happily with Kia who is 4 times her size. When she is tired, she likes to snuggle up with her doggie friends. We have not seen Zanet with cats, but I suspect with the right introductions she could live comfortably with a cat, although we cannot guarantee that. I suspect she would be wary and respectful of any cat in her family - while she might try to play, if a cat gave her one swat, she would probably learn quickly to leave him/her alone.

Training: Zanet is still pretty shy but is improving everyday. She doesn't have any solid commands yet, but she is slowly catching on. Zanet prefers to lay on the couch most of the time, with little spurts of play. She has never had an accident in her kennel or inside at Rescue Ranch. She is a very clean dog. Zanet does great in her kennel - she just tends to just snuggle with her blanket. Crating is always wise for a puppy, but she has not shown any destructive behavior and would probably just sleep on a sofa if left alone.

Activity requirements: Zanet is a young pup and she definitely enjoys her playtime with the other dogs at Rescue Ranch. That said, she is much calmer than the other puppies and is quicker to settle down and rest quietly in a shady spot in the yard, or preferably, on the sofa inside. She walks fairly well on leash, although if she gets afraid, she might put the brakes on and stop moving or try to bolt, so it will be important to have her secure when on a leash walk. Generally, however, she will walk nicely beside you without pulling.

Fence requirements: Fenced yards are always ideal, but Zanet is relatively calm for a young puppy and could probably do well in a home without a fenced yard as long as she got some good walks or playtime at the dog park or in doggie daycare. She does enjoy playing with other dogs, and if she has that opportunity, she doesn't need huge amounts of exercise.

Personality: Zanet is very shy and timid with people, but she is social and friendly with other dogs. She needs to take her time getting comfortable with new people and situations, and she will need a tender and patient family who will give her time and space to feel safe and adjust. Zanet is a very loving and snuggly dog once she is comfortable. She definitely has a more mellow temperament and she loves to lay down and snuggle.

Health history: Zanet had Giardia when she first arrived in the USA, but she has been fully treated for that. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on all her shots and bloodtests, on monthly heartworm preventions and is fully healthy. Like all dogs originating from Greece or any other endemic country, she will need to be tested annually for Leishmaniasis. Her last test was Negative on 2/17/2026, and she will be due for her next test in February 2027.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: Zanet is a dog who will need time and patience, but she is definitely worth it. When she reaches the point that she gives you her trust and love, it is beautiful and heartwarming. She is a great cuddler when she's ready! For a puppy, Zanet is very calm and gentle. She is terrific with all other dogs and is very well behaved. She will be a terrific family member for the right home. She will need to go to an adoptive home with at least one other dog that she can learn from.

Foster location: Delton, MI

Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight to get their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
