Omen 's Story

This is Omen, the best boy. He's 6 years (DOB: April 11, 2019) old and was surrendered to a Canadian shelter, with reasons unknown.

Omen arrived, really struggling to breathe as his nostrils were so tiny with very little airflow and he had an elongated palate (extra tissue at the roof of his mouth that extends into his airway) obstructed his airway.

Brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs are not meant to live their lives snorting, gagging, snorting, snoring, noisy breathing and struggles to exercise. They do , because of Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Omen had surgery to correct his breathing issues March 23.

Omen also had severe periodontal disease and required 20 teeth to be removed. And finally, he was cryptorchid (his testicle was in his abdomen) and needed a much bigger neuter surgery.

Omen is doing great, post-op.

We also learned, via his microchip, that his original name is Caesar.

Omen is just a great little dog, weighing in at 22 pounds.

Omen is on Tom & Sawyer Fresh Prepared Cooked dog food, due to needing soft food with all his surgeries and dental. Tom & Sawyer has kindly offered Omen's adopter a 30% lifetime discount on his food purchases, should an adopter choose to keep him on this food as a whole meal or food topper.

Omen will fit into most lifestyles, but he does need someone home most often or take your dog to work options, as he truly values human companionship. I think he's an easy candidate to develop separation anxiety if his people were out of the home for hours each day. Though we're not seeing any separation anxiety currently with him, but his foster family is home most often, but they do go out for errands without issues.

Omen is good with dogs, cats, kids and all humans. Just a beautiful soul in dog form.

Omen is a survivor that beat cancer, thankfully because we caught it within the 1st 2 weeks of it surfacing. He's a miracle dog. Though we don't know his life expectancy, our expectation is he goes on to live a very long life. Omen has never shown a single day of being sick and we hope his life stays that way. More on his diagnosis and status below.

He's truly just an amazing little guy.

FROM THE FOSTER;

Omen is a gentle, loving boy who truly just wants to be close to his people. When he first arrived, he was nervous and would shake in new situations, but it only took about two days for him to settle in. Since then, he has become a little shadow, always wanting to be near and connected to his family.

Omen is very affectionate and thrives on physical touch. Whether you are sitting on the couch, cooking in the kitchen, relaxing on the floor, or going to bed, Omen will happily stay close by and lean into you for comfort and love. He is a quiet, calm companion and has not barked during his time with us.

He is learning his basic commands well and responds to his name, a click or kiss sound, and simple commands such as ā€œsit,ā€ ā€œinā€ (for his crate, especially with a treat), and ā€œwait.ā€ Omen is food motivated and eager to please, which makes training enjoyable and rewarding.

Omen is house trained and has done very well with a routine. He had a few accidents when he first came into foster care, but now goes straight to the door when he needs to go outside.

Omen is a happy and social boy who enjoys meeting people and other dogs on walks. He loves a good walk and exploring the neighbourhood, but in true bulldog fashion, he will occasionally ā€œbrick upā€ and stop when he feels ready to head home, needing a little encouragement to continue.

He is especially wonderful with children — patient, calm, and happy to sit and listen while they read stories to him or spend quiet time together.

Omen loves cuddling on the couch and relaxing with his family, though he does need help getting onto the couch or encouragement with doggy steps. Omen can do stairs, and carpeted stairs are best for him, as it took him about a week to build confidence using them in our home.

Omen is truly a really good boy with a gentle heart and a loving spirit. He will make a beautiful addition to a family that is patient, kind, and willing to continue building his confidence. With love, routine, and companionship, Omen will be a loyal and devoted companion for many years to come.

=============================================

UPDATE: APRIL 22: we discovered a lump on Omen's lip that was not there 3 weeks prior.

āš•ļø APRIL 29, Omen was in for surgery to remove the tumour from his lip. He also had an additional 5 teeth removed in the near vicinity of the tumour to get as much tissue as possible to get clear margins.

They also retrieved cells from his lymph nodes, spleen and kidney to see if any of the cancer had spread, since it's such an aggressive cancer.

🟩 COST: $3,187.22

āš•ļø MAY 3RD THE FULL FINDINGS ARE IN

āœ… The pathology report describes the margins as narrow (about 1.8 mm), meaning the tumour cells were close to the edge of the sample submitted. However, during surgery we performed a wider resection than what is reflected in the sample, including removal of adjacent teeth to help achieve better margins. This additional tissue was not included in the section evaluated by the pathologist, so the true margins are likely wider than reported.

āœ… The mitotic count (a measure of how quickly the tumour cells are dividing) is elevated, which can increase the risk of recurrence, so this is something we will keep in mind moving forward.

āœ… The very good news is that there is no evidence of spread to the lymph nodes, liver, or spleen based on the samples we submitted. This is an important and reassuring finding.

āœ… In summary, this is a tumour type that can be more aggressive in this location, but we have removed it as thoroughly as possible and there is no current evidence of spread elsewhere in the body.

šŸ’° $8,168 has been invested in Omen, plus the cost of supplements, since his arrival

----------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.

Omen is doing great, post-op.

We also learned, via his microchip, that his original name is Caesar.

Omen is just a great little dog, weighing in at 22 pounds.
