Nelly NJ's Story

Nelly is a "Bernedoodle" who was surrendered to NorthStar when her family could no longer care for her. She is currently 4 months old (as of 2/28) and weighs about 20 pounds but her large paws indicate she will be a big girl when full grown. Due to gastrointestinal issues, she will need to be on prescription food for the rest of her life (Royal Canin GI puppy food, canned & kibble). She can't share other treats or food based bones or anything like that. She cannot have any food based chews or toys. Bully sticks cause explosive poops.

Nelly's ideal home environment would be a family with a fenced-in yard as she has a lot of puppy energy. She's eating 4x a day right now so she should go to a home where at least one person is home every day to take care of her as needed. A young couple could be a good fit, or a family with one stay at home parent and kids or even an active retired couple if they can handle the puppy energy. She requires a significant amount of attention because she can only be on this prescription diet. If the family already has dogs then they will have to know they have to keep food separate which is not an easy thing.

Nelly has no serious food aggression but she becomes very hyper when she's hungry. She growled once or twice at my rescue doodle when he walked over to sniff what she was eating but that's it. Usually she inhales her food in less than 5 minutes so there's not a lot of time for the other dog to check things out. My rescue will go over to her bowl when she's done to see what she was eating and she is not aggressive at all. I am giving her cup of the prescription kibble plus 1-2 tablespoons of the canned GI food at each feeding.

Nelly has been going to puppy daycare at Morris Animal Inn 3x a week and she loves it there. She has been in manners class at Morris Animal Inn and she knows her Sits and Downs, working on Come and Leave it. She seems to do better with big dogs than small dogs. She's constantly trying to chew my rescue dog's ears or tail (he's much shorter/smaller than her).

Nelly loves people but she'd do best in a home with older children (if any) who are 10 years old & up because she has a lot of puppy energy & jumps up on people a lot.

Nelly loves to go on walks, although we do short walks as opposed to long walks. She loves belly rubs and having her ears rubbed. She is house broken, mostly, although there are still occasional pee accidents. She is also crate trained for the most part. She'd rather stay on the dog bed but she loves to chew so she cannot be left walking around the house unsupervised. She will grab anything she can reach - and she can reach a lot of things. I keep her on leash when we are in the house if she's not in her crate so I can get to her quickly.

NOTE: Nelly has a fleece, non-shedding coat. However she is NOT hypoallergenic - her previous owner had bad allergies and living with Nelly caused sneezing/choking all the time.

If you have the proper home for Nelly and can give her the care she will need for the rest of her life, you can fill out an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org - be sure to mention her name, NELLY NJ!
