Milford 's Story

WEIGHT: 11 lbs

MY STORY: Milford is a charming Maltese mix who is currently transitioning from "breeder dog" to "beloved companion," and he is doing so with incredible grace. After life in a puppy mill, Milford is discovering that life inside a home is actually pretty wonderful.

Please read our breeder release article on our resources page.

Foster Update: Milford came to me in March, and in a few short weeks it is amazing how much he has changed in his world. He was a puppy mill dog for approximately 7 years who had never lived in a loving home. He had to learn the same things a puppy typically has to learn long after being a puppy. He now is accustomed to a clean, soft bed, regularly going out to do his business, daily snuggles and belly rubs, treats for being a good boy, and routine hygiene to keep him healthy.

He is still a bit skittish but is also such a cheeky boy. I can just see the delight in his eyes when I approach him with his leash. His desire to go out fights with his old habit of running away from people and becomes a “fake chase” ending in him politely sitting down waiting for his harness and leash.

Milford likes his people around. If you and your family are typically home, you might be perfect for Milford
He likes his crate, but with the door open. When he is left home alone, he stays in a room with his crate door open, but the room door closed. He is always a good boy.

Things adopters will love about Milford. He doesn’t shed, he doesn’t bark, and he takes treats very gently from your hand.

Milford is great on a leash. He loves his walks, and if you love to walk (or wish you did more walking) you might be perfect for Milford.

His foster does not have a fenced yard, so he is always on a leash when outside, and he is very comfortable doing his business quickly. If you have a fenced yard, he would love exploring and taking his time to find “just the right spot”.

His foster doesn’t have another dog or cat in the home, but the neighborhood is full of dogs and he clearly wants to make friends with them on walks. He is not at all reactive, not even a bark even when they are barking at him. His foster believes another dog in the home will help him come out of his shell.

Milford does not know his name (yet), so if you don’t love it, you can teach him to “come” to a name you find more fitting.

Milford has really taken to being a beloved pet. Someone will be so lucky to be able to adopt him and help show him the rest of the way. Is that you?

Read more on his Facebook Page UKnowuready

ADOPTION FEE: $650

To adopt the FIRST STEP is to complete an APPLICATION.

Adopters must be 24 years of age.
