Merle's Story

Meet Merle, a stunning 3-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix with an eye-catching merle coat, light blue eyes, and a personality that makes you want to spoil him.

Merle is both deaf and mildly visually impaired, but don’t let those labels fool you. This boy adapts beautifully and approaches life with remarkable trust and resilience. He may occasionally bump into something he doesn’t see, but once he learns a space, he navigates it confidently and comfortably. Watching him figure things out with quiet determination is honestly inspiring.

Merle is a loving, lower-energy guy who thrives with calm companionship. He does well with calmer dogs given slow introductions, but he would also be perfectly happy as a single dog soaking up all the love and attention for himself. He isn’t anxious or high-strung; just a gentle soul looking for safety, consistency, and kindness.

And while Merle may have a refined side, he also has a wonderfully goofy streak. If given the opportunity, he will roll directly into mud without hesitation… thankfully, he equally enjoys baths, so all is forgiven. He loves car rides, leisurely walks, naps in the sun, being pet, and spending time near his people.

Merle is also a smart boy who genuinely enjoys training, especially when treats are involved. Since leaving the shelter in April, he has been working hard in his foster home to polish his manners and continue building confidence. He is eager to learn and forms strong bonds with people who understand and respect his unique way of experiencing the world.

More than anything, Merle is looking for a compassionate person willing to be his guide, his safety net, and his biggest cheerleader. In return, he will give you unwavering trust, deep loyalty, and so much love.

Merle is fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, and has been treated for heartworms. He is expected to test negative at his next recheck.

This special boy has overcome so much already. Now he just needs someone willing to see how extraordinary he truly is. Apply to adopt Merle at CRAPrescue.org/application.

Adoption process: After your phone screening, we can schedule a meet and greet/the start of your foster-to-adopt trial. All adoptions have a 2 week minimum foster-to-adopt trial to make sure that the pet is the right fit for your home, and vice versa. Merle's adoption fee is $250, which would be due after the foster-to-adopt period. If you are located outside of Texas, we offer to-your-door transportation and have so many happy families as references. We are very transparent about the process so feel free to ask any questions.

Code Red Animal Project Inc.'s Adoption Policy
All of our adoptions are foster-to-adopt, giving adopters the opportunity to have a trial period. We firmly believe that it is impossible to know if a pet will be a good fit for your home based on a brief encounter. A trial period allows you to see the pet in your home as they decompress and find comfort, and introduce them to different situations and settings that are important in your life. Prior to finalizing adoption, we ask that the pet be seen by your vet so that your trusted veterinary team can assess the animal's health, note vaccination records, and prescribe 6-12 months of heartworm prevention (for dogs).
