Mel was adopted from Animal Aid in 2019 when she was a younger Beagle with four legs, caramel-colored hair, and a firm belief that any unattended food should be hers.<br/>Recently, she came back to us a little older, a lot wiser - and missing a leg.<br/>A lump had gone untreated too long, and by the time Mel saw a veterinarian, her leg could not be saved. There's an important lesson here: Please do not ignore a lump - on yourself or on your dog. Lumps are not known for quietly reconsidering their life choices and moving away.<br/>The wonderful news is that Mel's cancer had not spread. She's now healthy, happy, and fully recovered. She can move surprisingly fast on three legs.<br/>She just chooses not to.<br/>Mel prefers more sophisticated pursuits: being brushed, leaning her entire Beagle self against you while you scratch her head, resting in the shade, and softly howling hello to passing birds. The birds have not formally responded, but Mel remains committed to diplomacy.<br/>She's housetrained and was a fabulous family dog in a home with young children. She was returned for the usual complicated human reasons, none of which were her fault.<br/>At nine years old, Mel's not looking for adventure. She is looking for a soft bed, a shady spot, a good brush, and someone who understands that the finest moments in life are often spent leaning against a person who loves you.<br/>Come meet Mel at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. She's been waiting very patiently. Mostly in the shade. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily, including weekends & holidays.<br/>Interested?
