Max 6580's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.05/29/26. Max continues to make great progress, and his personality is really starting to shine. He is a big, goofy dog who warms up quickly and is friendly with everyone he meets. Despite having been in my home for only a week, he did very well at the adoption event and was friendly with both people and other dogs.

He is very interested in my cats. Cooper, my larger black-and-white cat, does not run, so Max follows him around throughout the day. Berry does run, however, and Max will chase him, so I think Max would do best in a home without cats. I plan to introduce him to small dogs this week to see whether he responds to them differently.

Max is doing well at night, with no accidents or issues. I keep him in my bedroom with the door closed so he does not spend the night looking for the cats. He is learning to signal when he needs to go outside, and with regular potty breaks, he has had no accidents this week.
When he first arrived, he showed some food sensitivity, but that has improved. He also got along with my shepherd right away and has shown no aggression. He is a snuggler and tries to get next to me when I get close to my shepherd, but he does it nicely and doesn’t show any aggressive behavior or cause my guy to react.

Max is personable and friendly, and everyone who meets him loves him. He is likely a golden retriever and German shepherd mix, though his mannerisms lean more toward the golden side. When you pet his head, his fur feels like a golden’s.

He is big, goofy, and increasingly showing his playful, puppy personality. He would make a great family dog and would likely do well with an established dog in the home. He enjoys playing and loves toys. He hasn’t tried to chew things, but he did grab my running shoes this morning before we went outside—he was happy and playing.

I’ll warn you now: if you’re interested in him and meet him, you will want to adopt him immediately. He is that good of a dog. Get your applications in early; once folks see him, he will be adopted soon.

05/20/26. I’d like to introduce Max. He’s a big, strikingly handsome boy—about a year and a half old and already around 90 pounds. He looks like a German Shepherd mix (maybe with some Yellow Lab), and his face is especially memorable. Max has a calm nature, with that fun, playful energy you’d expect from a young dog.

Max came to VGSR from a shelter in Roanoke, Virginia, where he was surrendered. I don’t know much about his past, but he seems sensitive to verbal corrections and very eager to please. He thrives on praise (which he earns most of the time!), though he’s still learning his manners. He’s friendly and wants to say hello to everyone he meets, but because he’s so big and still working on leash skills, walks can be a bit of a challenge. He’s mostly house-trained, with only the occasional accident.

Max is a total snuggler who likes to stay close and will happily follow me around the house. He isn’t a runner, and at the end of walks he often pulls toward home. He was a little wary his first night here, but he settled in quickly. His big head can look a bit intimidating at first, but he’s truly a sweetheart.

He has an easygoing temperament and gets along well with my older, larger shepherd. He’s curious about cats and will chase if they run, so we’re working on that in his foster home. He also seems to have a strong prey drive toward smaller animals, so I wouldn’t recommend a home with cats or small dogs. He’s friendly with both adults and children.

I’ll update his write-up this weekend as I get to know him a bit more. He’ll be at the adoption event at the PetSmart in Springfield on Saturday, May 23rd.
