Marshall's Story

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Meet Marshall - A Sweet Senior Still Waiting for His Second Chance

Marshall-known lovingly by staff as "Marshy" or "Marshmallow"-has been waiting longer than most, and it's hard not to feel how deeply he deserves to finally be home again.

After spending 8 years in a loving, structured home, Marshall found himself back in the shelter system, and the sudden change was overwhelming for him. Kennel life has been especially hard, and his anxiety grew to the point where he now spends his days in the quieter break room at the farm, where he feels more comfortable and settled.

And yet, even after everything, Marshall remains the same gentle, loving soul he's always been.

At his core, Marshall is a sweet, affectionate boy who just wants to be near his people. Once he feels safe, his personality begins to shine in the most endearing ways. He's goofy, expressive, and full of quiet charm-the kind of dog who makes you smile without even trying.

Marshall loves car rides, happily curling up in the back seat before eventually popping his head up to feel the wind on his face through an open window. He enjoys his naps, leans in for every bit of affection he can get, and has a funny, endearing habit of "talking" to his people when he's feeling happy or engaged. He'll roll around with his toys, soak up scratches (especially his favorite booty rubs), and even entertain himself by rolling toys down little hills just to chase them again.

There's a playful, silly side to Marshall that still comes out when he feels safe-and it's one of the most beautiful things about him.

What Marshall needs now is simple, but deeply important: a calm, loving home where he can feel secure again. A place where he can finally exhale, rebuild trust, and enjoy the comfort of belonging.

He has already given so much of his heart in his lifetime. He's just waiting for someone willing to give theirs back.

Marshall is a senior, and no senior dog should have to spend their golden years in a shelter. To help him find the family he so deeply deserves, his adoption fee has been waived and he is part of our REWARDS program.

Somewhere out there is a soft place for Marshall to land. We just need someone to see him.

ESTIMATED WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 65 pounds.

KNOWN WITH DOGS: Marshall is picky about his dog friends and would do best as the only dog in the home.

KNOWN WITH CATS: Marshall is not a fan of cats so we think a home without them would be best.

KNOWN WITH KIDS: Kids can make Marshall nervous and he would like to find a home where he can be the only child.

KNOWN CUES: Sit, Down, Wait, Come, Crawl, Touch, Spin, Wait, Leave it

KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING &/OR CRATING: Marshall is housebroken and does well when left alone.

KNOWN LIKES: Love and attention, Toys, Food, Walks, Car rides, People, The Park

KNOWN DISLIKES: Thunderstorms

___________________________________
If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out our dog adoption questionnaire and e-mail any questions to: trailshomefarm@homewardtrails.org

PLEASE VISIT THIS WEBSITE TO FIND THE ADOPTION QUESTIONNAIRE:
http://www.homewardtrails.org/adopt-a-pet/adoption-forms/

LOCATION:Trails Home Farm
ADOPTION COORDINATOR: Trails Home Farm

HOW TO MEET THIS ANIMAL: All dogs located at Trails Home Farm are in Delaplane, VA and require an appointment for approved applicants to have a meet and greet.

ADOPTION FEE: Adoption Fee: WAIVED! We thank DoodyCalls of Northern Virginia for their generous sponsorship of Marshall which means he is FREE! His adoption fee has been sponsored by DoodyCalls of Northern Virginia! You can learn more about them at https://www.doodycalls.com/northern-va/. I'M ALSO PART OF THE REWARDS PROGRAM. WE WILL ALSO PAY MY FOSTER OR ADOPTER $500.

HT has a number of dogs that need very special homes. These dogs have been failed by humans along the way, leaving them homeless and with issues from their treatment. We'll be honest. Some of them are real jerks. But not always. And not to everyone. Not everyone can be charming ALL the time, right? Others are just fearful and don't like other animals because they have had a bad interaction at some point. Some of them love other dogs but are just plain scared of everything. But all of them are good on the inside. And we believe that ALL of them deserve a chance at life and love. And we're looking to find the right human out there to make that happen. But competition is tough. And they're up against small, well-behaved doggies...so we are offering incentives for special humans willing to give these pooches a chance. WE WANT YOU!

***We are paying $500 to any approved foster or adopter of our REWARDS dogs.***

The human will also get ongoing training support, all supplies covered and a $25 Amazon gift card each month for 6 months. You will learn and grow. You will be doing a world of good for a dog who has really had it rough in life.
-------------
HT ADOPTION INCLUSIONS:
-Spay/Neuter
-First 3 distemper series vaccines and dewormings
-Rabies vaccine* age appropriate at time of adoption
-Microchip - lifetime with no registration fees
-Current on heartworm preventative
-Current on flea/tick preventative
----
EXCLUSIVE HTAR ADOPTER BENEFITS:
-$15 off your first chewy order of $49.00 or more
-Exclusive pet insurance offers
- $250 coverage at any VCA Hospital in the country
-COMPLIMENTARY FIRST EXAMS at 10 DC-Area veterinarians
- Free year-round dog training
- KEEP YOUR PET SAFE: Homeward Trails is proud to offer PetLink GPS trackers that will allow you to know where your pet is in real time.**Exclusive for HT Adopters (does not include subscription plan): $50 Check it out here: https://landing.petlink.net/gps-dog-tracker
-A portion of EVERY ADOPTION FEE supports spay/neuter efforts in under resourced communities
-Free doggy day care offers
-EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTS for Homeward Trails events and merchandise
-Win a $50 Amazon gift card

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Adopting a pet is a SERIOUS COMMITMENT. We strongly encourage anyone thinking about adding a fuzzy member to their family to do their research and be ready for this commitment. Take a moment to read through this short but helpful Are You Ready to Adopt? page. And please carefully consider the financial obligation you will take on when adopting a new family member. It is important to be sure you can properly care for your pet now and in the future. We will also be happy to work with you to figure out what kind of pet is best for you. If you want to have a pet in your home but aren’t sure you can make the 10-20 year commitment, consider fostering pets. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue will work directly with you, the prospective adopter, providing individualized attention and support in order to help you find the perfect pet for your family. We also suggest you take the time to read through the many resource documents on our website to prepare yourself for the many things that adoption will bring! We provide as much information on each animal’s history, disposition and health as we can gather. We strongly believe that honesty is the best policy. We want each of our animals to find the RIGHT home, not just ANY home. Likewise, we want you to find the pet who best matches your lifestyle and interests. Pet Adoption Questionnaire and Interview You will first be required to complete our Adoption Questionnaire through our ShlelterLuv system. Once received, an HT rep will contact you via phone or e-mail. If it seems you are a good fit for each other based on the info you provided, a phone interview will follow. If you are renting, we require proof that you are allowed to have a pet as well as any breed or size restrictions that may exist. If you have pets or did previously, we require your vet information and we will call them to verify that your pets are in good health, current on vaccines and spayed/neutered. We require that all pets in the home be spayed/neutered unless there are health reasons that can be verified with the vet. Pet Adoption Agreement In our Adoption Agreement, we require that every animal be spayed/neutered (if not prior to adoption) by a specific date. This is VERY important as the overpopulation of dogs and cats in our country is a sad result of too many unplanned litters! If for any reason the match is not as perfect as we all had hoped, the dog or cat must be returned to Homeward Trails, not given away or turned in to a shelter. Serious fines apply to violators of the Homeward Trails Agreement to Adopt. So be clear about what you are signing and be prepared to abide by the contract. It is legally binding and we take it very seriously. Note: Homeward Trails requires adopters to be at least 21 years of age. We will require proof of age to finalize any adoption. Pet Adoption Fee Homeward Trails’ adoption fees range depending on type of animal, the originating shelter and the vetting the animal has received. Our adoption fees are set to allow us to cover our expenses as well as to help other animals in our program that require additional care. Our fees cover vetting costs, shelter fees, fuel for transport, copying and printing of contracts and paperwork, our website presence, food, boarding, behavioral training and additional medical care. It is important to note that while the animal you adopt may not require all of these things, many other animals in our system do. Thus, any “extra” money from adoption fees goes to help those animals who may require additional care. By adopting from Homeward Trails, you are not saving just one life, you are helping to save others as well. Benefits for HT Adopters Every adopted Homeward Trails animal comes with 30 days of free pet health insurance. We are proud to partner with the following veterinarians who offer a free first exam for your animal, exclusively for HT adopters: Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Palisades Veterinary Clinic, Sunshine Animal Hospital and Clarendon Animal Care and all VCA Animal Hospitals. Additionally, any VCA hospital will cover illnesses up to $250 at no cost to any Homeward Trails adopter. We also provide a 30-minute phone consult with a professional dog trainer at Fur-Get Me Not within the first 30 days of adopting - just for HT adopters in the Arlington/Alexandria area. Start your new dog out on the right foot with this valuable, expert advice and guidance FREE! Our Foster Program Help us save more lives by becoming a foster! Fosters are like way stations between under resourced shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs and cats before they are euthanized at the shelters. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering by visiting http://www.homewardtrails.org/foster-a-pet/dog-and-cat-foster-program/
