Margo's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) 'Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?' for additional information.

Margo is a 1-year-old mini Goldendoodle with a spirit that’s nothing short of incredible. This spunky, bouncy girl is full of life, love, and resilience—and she’s ready to find the forever home she’s always deserved.
Margo’s journey hasn’t been easy. She was found abandoned in a kennel inside an empty home after her previous owners were evicted. Severely neglected, —her eyes even matted shut—malnourished at under 20 pounds (when she should be closer to 45 lbs), and covered in fleas. Thanks to a Good Samaritan, she was rescued just in time and given the medical care, nourishment, and love she so desperately needed. Her coat and skin were in such poor condition that Margo had to be shaved under sedation. She is currently regrowing her fur.
Now safe in rescue, Margo is leaving her past behind and looking ahead to a bright, happy future—and her personality is truly blossoming. She’s energetic, playful, and incredibly affectionate. Like a little spring, she bounces through life with joy and excitement. She absolutely loves treats (food is definitely her love language!), enjoys toys of all kinds, and wants nothing more than to be close to her people or dog friends.
Margo does great with other dogs and would thrive in a home with a playful canine companion or as your one-and-only. Because of her high energy and enthusiasm, she’d do best with older children who can match her zest for life. Her experience with cats is unknown.
She is potty trained and crate trained, though she’s still working through some kennel-related habits due to her past trauma. With patience and consistency, she continues to make great progress. She’s also learning leash skills and will flourish with continued guidance and structure.
Margo’s ideal home is one filled with love, patience, and plenty of playtime. She doesn’t ask for much—just a family who will cherish her, include her, and give her the life she fought so hard to have. In return, she’ll give you her whole heart.
Like many Doodle breeds, Margo will need ongoing training, consistency, boundaries, and plenty of physical and mental activity to thrive. She would do best in an active home that can provide strong leadership, structure, and regular socialization. Breed experience (or similar high-energy dog experience) is preferred. Even with a fenced yard, daily walks and outings are essential to keep her mentally stimulated, prevent boredom, and continue building good leash manners.
Margo’s adoption fee is $425, which helps offset the significant cost of her veterinary care and allows us to continue rescuing dogs in need. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue and rely on adoption fees and donations to save lives.
Her adoption fee includes spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, heartworm testing (and treatment if needed), and a microchip.
To learn more about our adoption process or to apply, please visit:http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption
Could you be the happy ending sweet Margo has been waiting for? Don't wait to apply for this lovely girl!

Please review the information in the 'About Us', 'Important Considerations' and 'Adopt' sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.

Heartland German Shepherd Rescue (HUGS)'s Adoption Policy
-As part of the application process, we ask that you provide references (to include a veterinarian), and a home visit is required. -Applicants must be adults 19 years old or older. -We require a securely-fenced yard (for more details please see our Safe Containment/Fencing section below). Use of Tie Outs or Invisible Fencing is not allowed for HUGS dogs. -All HUGS dogs MUST be INSIDE, family pets in their adoptive home. HUGS dogs may NOT be outdoor, free-roaming, backyard, porch, outdoor kennel, dog house or garage dogs. NO EXCEPTIONS, PLEASE. -The dogs we have in rescue are typically from breeds that require lots of direction, strict boundaries and limitations, and lots of exercise and dedication in order to become well-rounded adults. That is why we look for experienced dog-owners, with a proven history of great vet care and dedication to their dogs, regardless of medical or behavioral issues. -Submission of an application for adoption is not a guarantee of approval. There is no guarantee that applicants will be approved to adopt a specific dog, or that a specific dog will still be available by the time that your application is approved. Applications are valid for 6 months from the time of submission. After 6 months, you may be asked to re-apply. Thank you for your understanding. -Please note that submitting an application requires HUGS to go through a series of steps. Receiving a phone interview or Home Visit does not guarantee approval. The adoptions team can approve or deny the application at any time during the process. -We do not have a public facility. Meet and greets are scheduled by appointment only for approved adopters. -Even for approved adopters, it is not always easy to find a suitable dog quickly (especially when looking for a good match for a home with an adult dog). For example, some dogs will not be a good fit in a home with cats, or a home with other dogs. As an additional example, some dogs will need a very active home, while others may need a more calm and relaxed environment. Final decisions on adoptions are always at the sole discretion of the HUGS Adoption Team. -Adoption fees range from $275 to $450 depending on age and breed. All adoption fees go back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. HUGS is a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and we rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. -For more details about the application process and requirements, please visit our website at http://www.heartlandgsrescue.org/info/adoption.
