Major's Story

Meet Major: Our Sweet, toy Hoarding Hippo 🐾
We are going to be 100% honest with you: Major is a special boy looking for a very specific home. We know this is a big ask, but we also know the perfect match is out there.

To put it bluntly, Major hated the shelter. The loud, high-stress environment spiked his anxiety, which caused him to be barrier-reactive toward other dogs and nippy with multiple handlers. But two of our amazing volunteers refused to give up on him. They arranged for an independent, professional behavioral assessment outside of the shelter environment—and Major passed with flying colors! He showed absolutely zero issues with humans of any size.

Currently, Major is thriving in a foster home. His foster mom and dad report that he has shown ZERO negative behaviors in their house. It turns out that once you remove the stress of the shelter, Major is just a big, goofy couch potato.

The Good Stuff (The "Hippo" Highlights)
Housebroken & Crate Trained: Major does wonderfully in his crate when unsupervised (after afew minutes of announcing that he's too handsome for solitary) and knows exactly where to do his business.
Toy Enthusiast: He absolutely LOVES toys and will happily hoard them in his bed like a little dragon safeguarding its treasure.
The Sound Effects: He has a hilarious, snorty-snore way of breathing that will keep you laughing. He genuinely looks and sounds like a land hippopotamus.

The Realistic Stuff (What His Perfect Match Needs to Know)
No Other Pets: Because of his high excitability, Major needs to be the only pet in the home.
No Small Children: Major doesn't know his own size or strength. When he gets excited, he’s a bit of a wrecking ball, so a home without little ones is required.
Weather Sensitive: Like an English Bulldog, Major has some breathing limitations. He will overheat quickly once the temperature hits around 75°F. His walks and outdoor activities need to be kept brief and limited to the cooler times of the day.
Ongoing Commitment: Major is doing fantastic, but his transition to a new home will require continued structure, training, and managed socialization.
The Bottom Line: Major is a resilient, loving bully mix who just needs a savvy handler to help him navigate the world. His foster parents are doing an incredible job, but he's ready for his forever castle.

How to Meet Major:
Major is currently in his foster home, so meet-and-greets will be scheduled exclusively for approved applicants. If you have the right setup and the heart for a goofy guy who just needs a little management, please apply online at the link above!

Jackson Animal Care Center's Adoption Policy
We are located in West TN. We do local adoptions with the adopter picking the pet up directly from our facility and out-of-state adoptions, which utilize a private transport company to ensure the pet gets safely to their new parent. Our adoption process is very straightforward. We have a one-page adoption application to enable us to match you with currently available pets and help us determine if the pet you are interested in is a good fit for your home dynamic. After application approval, the adopter will pay the fee listed on the pet's profile, and arrangements will be made for them to pick up the pet from the shelter or our transport partner if the adopter is outside TN. If the adopter is outside TN, the posted adoption fee includes a legally required interstate health certificate and transport cost. All of our pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm negative, screened for obvious health issues, and treated for any injury they may have had when they came into our facility. Upon adoption, we provide the new pet parents copies of all available medical and behavioral paperwork for the animal they are adopting. We strive to be VERY transparent with our potential adopters because we want all our pets to find homes that will last the rest of their lives. We are happy to discuss the pet's behavior, personality, quirks, special needs, etc., and will address or discuss any concerns the potential adopter may have. Please feel free to reach out to us directly by phone or email for more information. *We reserve the right to refuse an adoption for any reason, but the goal of JACC is to find the RIGHT home for every pet in our program. Even though an adopter might not be a great fit for a particular pet, they might be a great option for a different one.
