MAGGIE-JJ (LAKELAND FLORIDA)'s Story
JCLDR WILL CONSIDER A FOSTER WITH INTENT TO AFOPT, CALL JANEEN TO FIND OUT HOW THIS WORKS. AND LONG DISTANCE TRANSPORT CAN BE DISCUSSED) Maggie is a brindle year old spayed (Brindle comes from the Mastiff influence and greyhound influence in the Catahoula foundation, no Pitbull in this do) Catahoula female and she could be purebred, the prettiest brindle we have seen to date in the Catahoula breed period. She is microchipped, actual birth date is 4/19/2024. She is up to date on vaccs and will be HW tested and placed on preventative. She is fed twice daily (Pacific Stream Taste of the Wild dog food) She is completely housebroken, crate trained to open wire type. She is muzzle trained she grabs things with her mouth and eats it, it is a preventative.. curious puppy antics. It is a game with her. She gets treats when muzzle is on, it is not a punishment. (JCLDR believes in this for safety and this is a good thing) She loves the car, no whining and barking, sits in front seat like a person and looks out, no misbehaviors there. She loves going to Home Depot and sits on the cart, loves people. Very well socialized. She has been around respectful dog children ages 6 and up and is good with them. No toddlers because she is a puppy.. she is real affectionate but would be puppy playful and probable be too much for them. She is good on leash but when on a scent typical hound dog tugging behavior but it is never out of control. A tug on leash and she listens and responds. She has been in a kiddie pool and puts her head under the water and makes bubbles .. a funny fun girl, but we are not sure about swimming in deep water. Never has been tested. She does great on vets visits, wiggly and happy and social with them, no trauma to it for her.. even on a blood draw. She does accept nail trim with a dremmel but she does get a little mouthy so she is muzzled but she doesn’t try to bite. Dogs don’t like their feet handled because that is how a predators in the wilds takes them down so it is uncomfortable and they feel vulnerable. She isn’t bad with it. Not at all. This is a very well trained good dog. She will soft alert and short alert when company comes or something is out there. She does not like mannequins or pictures of people, she will growl till owners tell her it is ok. If she is afraid of something and you show her it is ok.. she trusts her owners judgement and will sniff and accept within reason. Company coming? She gets puppy excited but settles down. She is a cuddler and gives kisses, even to strangers as long as introduced by the family. She loves meeting new people. One other big positive thing about her is she communicates almost like a person. Makes eye contact and she has very clear body language. She tells you what she wants, especially when she needs a potty break. If she jumps in your lap she is telling you she needs to go out. Her puppy enthusiasm is definitely all exclamation points. She loves to play tug and she likes the squeaker toys, she has to have no soft or stuffed toys because she will tear them up and ingest them and there is danger of bowel blockage. She only gets rubber toys or something that is not easily destroyed. She should be supervised with toys. Her goal with toy is to destroy and ingest. She is like a baby, everything goes in her mouth. She is very ball driven and loves to chase. She does bring it back sometimes. She has puppy short term focus. Frisbees and anything you throw she chases. She is given elk antlers as chews and loves them and they last pretty well. Family keeps her off leash in the yard with supervision and she has not been able to jump over their yard fence.. 4 ft fence she has not tried to jump but she has gone over a baby gate.

HISTORY: The family experienced a loss and so they got her to ease the pain. They had an older well trained nicely mannered and timid terrier and at first they got along but the honeymoon is over and two females together and a lot of change and trauma in the owners life has brought dog tension to both females and so Maggie has to be rehomed. They will never get along again probably. She has been around a male dog before but she really should be an only dog. Her enthusiasm and rough typical Catahoula play, some dogs might mis interpret. We cannot guarantee she will accept another dog or vice versa. She is a true person companion dog. This is the reason for her rehoming. Two female dogs not getting along. She came originally from the local SPCA. She must be rehomed.. Right now she is being crated and rotated. She is good and crate broke.

GOOD: She is so intelligent and she is adorable and she just makes you feel like she is all heart and in tune with you. She is smart and she is Catahoula focused but she will do your bidding plus for a good solid special treat and even her own dog food. .. she loves to learn and do tricks to get her food and treats. She is loyal and would protect her owner but is not human aggressive. She’s is an amazingly a good dog and it is unfortunate that for her whole short adjustment year which it takes a good year for dogs to settle in.. she has had trauma and confusion, but look how good she is in spite of it? She is just a puppy.

BAD: High prey drive no small animals.. that means no cats. Because the home she is in has had turmoil and sorrow and change, the whole year she has been with them, it has been the trigger for her food gulping and grass eating and even her impatience with the other dog. Slow feeder or hand feeding helped and change of food has stopped the eating things outside since they did it and to date. . She is a voracious eater and it causes digestive problems for dogs like that. She has been shock collar tested and that is not good…Don’t ever do it again. It makes her angry and scared and she gets defensive because it hurts. Sensitive .. no ELECTRIC DEVICES for her and JCLDR does not sanction them anyway.. period. They do more harm than good and are inhumane. No invisible fences either.

UGLY: Just the dog reactivity and she can be food possessive.. but steady consistency and help from JCLDR can fix this. We recommend hand feeding or any food she has just trade for a higher end treat and she is fine. She growls when you offer her food but if you say Gentle she will take it nice and eat it. It is more of a game and talking..expressing her delight…and it does happen with dogs sometimes in enthusiasm and excitement. dog survival tactics for her partially. Easy to be worked with and JCLDR can help you totally get rid of this. She is a puppy learning growing and willing to please…ever changing…polishing dogs is how they become the BEST….we do the polishing and guiding and directing and it takes time. Large dogs do not mature mentally until about five years old…in most large breeds. They are teenagers evolving.,
