Maggie at Jefferson Feed

UPDDATE: HEARTWORM TREATMENT COMPLETED! MAGGIE IS NOW AT JEFFERSON FEED WAITING TO MEET HER FUREVER FAMILY!

Meet Maggie.

Maggie is estimated to be 7-8 years old, about 60 pounds, and has been waiting for her chance since August 2025. She came into JPAWS, the parish animal shelter, as a stray with no known history. No one ever came looking for her. What we do know is who Maggie is now, and who she has been quietly showing us all along.

Maggie is a dog who wants a human bond more than anything else. She loves attention and will ask for it. She leans into you, gives hugs, and offers kisses freely. At adoption events, she showed her true self. Calm, gentle, polite, content to chew on a toy until a person walked by, then immediately dropping everything just to interact. People matter more to her than anything else.

After months in the shelter, we decided to give Maggie a chance here at the Jefferson SPCA inside Jefferson Feed to give her a break and to be seen by a different audience on the Eastbank. Being here showed us something important. She gets excited. She wants out. She wants connection. She wants to be with people. And when she gets that, when she has a chance to stretch her legs, settle, and focus on a person, Maggiee shows exactly who she is. She loves her outside time in her foster mom's yard.

She walks well on a leash, appears to be house trained, and is deeply people oriented. She seems scared of cats when we walked her by cats, but with time and guidance, she may learn to be okay with them. Maggie is not aggressive. She is simply a dog who has been waiting too long and wants her turn to belong to someone.

Maggie's foster mom bought her an enrichment toy and she absolutely loves it! True to her border collie mix nature, she is smart and loves working for her treats. Maggie's heartworm treatment has been completed. She has a follow up appointment in December 2026 to retest her which is part of the treatment protocol. Her heartworm treatment has been fully covered by Jefferson SPCA. What she truly needs is an adopter, a home she can call her very own. Maggie is good with other dogs and would thrive with a canine sibling to share her time and energy with. She even likes watching the birds in her foster mom's backyard when the weather permits.

Maggie has done everything asked of her. She waited patiently in a shelter kennel and at Jefferson Feed until her foster mom offered to help her through heartworm treatment. She has shown up to several adoption events and tried her best but no one has taken a chance on her yet. Maggie is ready. She just needs someone to see her.

Contact our volunteer dog adoption coordinator, Martha, at cajunlassie78@att.net to schedule a time to meet this wonderful happy girl.

Adoption fee includes vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworms can be treated through our Fix-A-Heart Program. Adopter has to buy a year supply of heartworm prevention before treatment begins.

Please note: this application is view-only in Dropbox and must be downloaded to your device to be completed.
