Mac's Story

Hi, I'm Mac-an 85-pound Anatolian Shepherd mix with a big heart and so much potential. When I first came to the shelter, I was very scared and unsure of new people, and I let that show by barking and growling to protect myself. But with time to decompress and people who have been patient with me, I've opened up so much. Once I feel comfortable, I can be playful, goofy, and excited to be part of the fun. I do best with slow introductions, because quick movements or people reaching for me too fast can make me nervous, especially in busy situations. When people respect my pace and give me space to warm up, I show what a sweet boy I really am.

Because new environments can still be a little overwhelming for me, I'm looking for a patient home where everyone understands boundaries and will help me continue building confidence. I'd like to meet everyone in the household before going home so we can all feel comfortable together, and I'd do best in a home without small kids. I'm still young and would benefit so much from continued training, socialization, and confidence boosting to help me become the very best version of myself. A family familiar with my breed, with room for me to stretch out and explore, would be a wonderful fit. With patience, understanding, and the right guidance, I know I can blossom into a loyal and devoted companion.

My adoption fee of $300+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
