Lucy was found as a stray in Tennessee but is now living the local life in New England. As she settled in, it became clear that this environment was simply too overwhelming for her. Lucy appears to thrive with routine, predictability, and a quieter lifestyle.<br/><br/>Lucy has shown resource guarding around high-value items and, at times, the people she is closely bonded with. Lucy has had a few teeth-to-skin incidents which occurred when unfamiliar people entered her space or approached someone she was attached to. While these behaviors require thoughtful management, Lucy has consistently shown excellent bite inhibition and has never caused a serious injury.<br/><br/>Like many sensitive dogs, Lucy communicates her discomfort through body language and warning signals. Her behavior appears to be rooted in fear, insecurity, and feeling overwhelmed rather than an intent to harm.<br/><br/>What makes Lucy especially encouraging is that she does not struggle in every environment. During her behavioral evaluation, she quickly relaxed, accepted treats, responded beautifully to training, and became social and engaged after a brief period of alert barking.<br/><br/>Lucy also continues to do very well at doggy daycare, where she has maintained positive relationships with familiar dogs like her bestie Ethel and has had no reported incidents. While she may be reactive toward unfamiliar dogs on leash, she generally enjoys the company of other dogs in appropriate settings.<br/><br/>Lucy Life in the Dreamhouse:<br/><br/>Lucy is currently looking for an amazing foster who will:<br/>- Help Lucy build her confidence and new coping skills<br/>- Understand that behavior is communication!<br/>- Have experience with resource guarding or fear-based behaviors.<br/>- Be comfortable reading canine body language and recognizing early stress signals.<br/>- Use positive reinforcement training.<br/>- Provide a calm, predictable home with limited visitors.<br/>- Be patient and willing to let Lucy move at her own pace.<br/>- An adult-only home is strongly preferred, though a home with respectful, dog-savvy older teens may be considered.<br/><br/>Lucy may do well with a calm, socially appropriate dog after careful introductions, but she may also benefit from being the only dog while she settles in. Our behavior team will provide ongoing support, guidance, and training resources to help set Lucy and her foster family up for success. <br/><br/>With this girl by your side, you'll be saying "Lucy, I'm home!" every day!<br/><br/>All dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
