Lou's Story

If you are looking for a sweet, handsome, well-mannered, close to perfect rescue English Setter, 5-year-old Lou may be just the dog for you. His foster mom normally rescues Brittany Spaniels but she regularly helps ES rescues/dogs in need and she calls Lou the best Setter Ive ever met and describes him as close to perfect. Lou originally came into a county shelter as an unclaimed stray unaltered with a severe ear infection and kennel cough. SWESR was there for him and after receiving plenty of love and medical care, Lou is now fully recovered, neutered, and ready to find his forever home.

Lou is the ultimate office assistant and indoor roommate. Inside the house, he is mellow, polite, and house-trained. He doesnt dig, chew inappropriately, or mark. If you work from home, Lou is a dream; he will happily lay right next to your desk on his bed for hours, sleeping quietly until you are ready to take a break. He is a soft, sensitive soul who is shy and timid around new people at first, but after he gets to know you he seeks attention at appropriate times and never jumps up on people.

Step outside, and Lous true Setter instincts shine! He absolutely loves his morning exercise and starts every single day looking for birds. He is very birdy and will enthusiastically patrol the yard, watch the trees, and even give a little bark or whine to tell those birds who is boss! Lou gets along beautifully with other dogs and is incredibly easygoing, though he is independent enough that he could easily be content as an only dog. He might be ok with inside only cats but weve not first-hand observed him with cats. He is a quick learner who is highly treat-motivated, makes a wonderful, calm car passenger. Like many ES, Lou can be a picky eater who prefers to have his own food bowl to himself.

Lou will be a great choice for a Setter enthusiast or a first-time Setter owner. Because he has a true love for the outdoors and Setter-self-exercising, he requires a home with a secure fence at least 6 feet and large enough for him to really stretch out and run. Typical of field ES, he works the fenceline and if there is a weakness or way out, he will find it. Like most ES, his family will need to be mindful about keeping external doors and gates closed securely. If given the chance outside a fence, this boy would run like the wind and likely not come back so he must always be kept on a leash or in a secure fenced yard. Lou would thrive in a relatively quiet household with adults or older pre-teen/teenage children who appreciate his sweet, gentle nature. His future family should also plan to do regular ear checks to ensure his past infections stay a thing of the past.

It is a mystery why this incredible boy was never claimed at the shelter, but their loss is your gain. Lou is ready to fill your days with quiet loyalty and outdoor fun
