Lorelai, 2 year-old, spayed female, Labrador mix, 54 pounds. Lorelai is in a foster home in Austin, Texas, and can be transported out of state once an approved adopter is lined up!

Lorelai is a sweet girl who has come a long way after a sad start in life. She was found living as a stray and pregnant with at least her second litter. Her puppies are now all grown up and it's her turn to find her forever home! She has made great strides in learning to trust humans, and would make a wonderful companion for a loving and patient family!

Lorelai's play style is moderate. At 2 years old, she's still young and likes to initiate play with other dogs. She engages in playful biting, wrestling, and running around the yard. But she's also completely content sunbathing and napping on the grass. She's become particularly close with her foster sibling, a 1-year-old chiweenie, whom she constantly plays with and mothers in a sweet way. She's also very close with Luke, the suspected father of her puppies.

Lorelai is more on the submissive side around other dogs. Her fosters have a more dominant boxer female, and she and Lorelai get along great. Lorelai does wonderfully on picking up social cues from her foster siblings when playing, and has played with dogs of all sizes! When she was first rescued, she would show her teeth to other dogs, but this was likely because she was extremely scared. Now, she's always with up to 6 other dogs of various sizes and has no issue with any of them. That being said, any introduction she has with other dogs, especially in a new home, should be slow.

Lorelai's ideal home will be patient and work with her on leash training. She is still hesitant about the leash, so an apartment where she must be walked on the leash to use the restroom is not a good fit. A quiet home with calm to moderate activity and a fenced-in yard would be perfect! Lorelai is seeking a patient family that can understand that she's still learning how to be a dog. She's going to be fearful at times and needs to warm up on her time and in her space. She can't be forced to do anything against her will -- that would set her back and make her more scared. Small wins with positive reinforcement (treats) are what she needs!

Lorelai hasn't been around cats in a home environment, but there were stray cats on the property where she was found. She has also not been around children yet, however, she would likely do well with children who are at least 13 and are respectful of her space and need for slow, calm introductions to allow for her to feel comfortable.

Lorelai is completely housebroken and although she isn't currently crated her fosters expect that she'll do well and become used to the crate with training and patience. Currently, she spends her time in the common area with Luke during the day, when her fosters leave the home, and overnight. Recently, she's been jumping up on the bed to cuddle and sleep (which is a huge step for her). She also likes to be on the couch at times, but typically, she's most comfortable lying on her dog bed near the edge of the living room. She doesn't have many issues with destructive chewing when left home alone, however, any hazards or particularly appealing foods should be kept out of reach.

Lorelai hasn't been observed to have food aggression with kibble, but she is quite food-motivated and will occasionally try to eat the other dogs' food. She's also quick to take treats from your hand or jump in front to take them when you're attempting to feed another dog. She's been a bit protective of bones in the past if they're particularly yummy to her, however, she has no aggression at all with people. Feeding dogs separately is always best!

Low to moderate energy is the best way to describe cutie Lorelai's activity level. She enjoys being able to go outside and lounge in the sun. Lorelai would likely thrive with another dog at home to keep her company since she's used to them. Lorelai loves to chew on bones and will occasionally squeak a toy or two as well! She is a cuddly girl at heart, and loves to give kisses once she knows she can trust you!

Speaking of trust, Lorelai will flourish with owners who are understanding that she will be hesitant about strangers due to her past. She also suffers from anxiety in the car and needs to be picked up and placed inside the car.

Gaining the trust of a dog who has not had much reason to in the past is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world, and with Lorelai's precious personality, it is that much sweeter! When she's feeling comfortable, she's the best at showing affection and love!
