🐾 Behind the Bark: Jack & Lonnie<br/><br/>Jack and Lonnie are not a bonded pair. In fact, there are days when Jack seems perfectly content with the idea of not seeing Lonnie at all.<br/><br/>Somehow, that is part of what makes these two so entertaining together.<br/><br/>Lonnie, about 41⁄2 years old, is short, stocky, strong, and seemingly bursting with excitement about nothing in particular and everything all at once. Open her kennel and she knows where she's going, straight to the yard for toy collection, running, and the occasional round of impromptu parkour where an unsuspecting observer may become part of the course.<br/><br/>She's very much a dog with her own agenda. She enjoys attention, but she doesn't spend her time waiting around for someone to entertain her. Several volunteers also know a much calmer side of Lonnie. Once she's gotten that initial energy out, she'll stretch out in the sun, soak up pets, or simply enjoy being around someone. She's happy to have the company, but perfectly content on her own, too.<br/><br/>Lonnie originally came to the rescue as a found dog and has had an adoption that didn't work out. For a girl who enjoys running as much as she does, a home with a fenced-in yard would be ideal.<br/><br/>Jack, now five, originally came to the rescue as a puppy. He was adopted once before and later returned, and finding the right home for him will take a particular fit.<br/><br/>Several volunteers describe Jack as a dog who "talks with his eyes." He's expressive, observant, and very capable of forming an opinion about whether he'll participate in Lonnie's antics or not. Sometimes it's a yes. Other times it's a "we're going for a walk." Fortunately, for a big, strong dog, he's generally a pretty easy walker. He's also always up for a game of keep-away tag.<br/><br/>Jack can also be pushy, including his well-known habit of trying to hump certain people. Some volunteers rarely see it, while others remain among the chosen few. He's a powerful dog, so clear and consistent boundaries are important, and he responds well to them.<br/><br/>Lonnie settled that particular discussion with Jack a long time ago.<br/><br/>Some volunteers have noticed that Jack is less comfortable with unfamiliar people than with those he knows and trusts.
