Lilo's Story
Meet Lilo: The Unicorn-Seeking Pup

Lilo isn’t your made for everyone kind of dog. And honestly? That’s a good thing because he deserves someone just as unique as he is.

This handsome boy has been at the shelter for over 3 years, and while that might sound heartbreaking (and it is), it also means we know him really well. What we’ve learned:

He’s brilliant. Lilo studies people and his surroundings carefully. When he decides you’re “his person,” you’ll have a loyal best friend who bonds hard.

He’s making real progress. Thanks to patience, training, and a little Fluoxetine, Lilo has learned to settle, relax, and even nap wrapped in a blanket on a lap. That’s a huge deal for a dog who used to always be “on alert.”

He chooses love over chaos now. Whether it’s ignoring commotion outside or leaning in for snuggles instead of springing up, he’s showing us that he wants to be calm and connected.

But here’s the part that matters: Lilo isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” pup. He has some anxiety and fear-based triggers. He’s not the dog for a busy household, kids, or a family with pets. He needs someone who:

Is dog savvy and experienced with reactivity.

Lives a quieter lifestyle without lots of visitors.

Can keep routine and structure (bonus points if you’re the calm, unflappable type—think early-retired military or someone who really gets PTSD and routine).

Will commit to making him their one and only.

In return? You’ll get a dog who will adore you fiercely, make you laugh, and be the most rewarding project you’ve ever taken on.

We joke that Lilo is looking for his unicorn adopter—someone rare, patient, and special. But unicorns do exist, and he deserves to find his.

He came in as a stray in 2022. He’s about 5/6 years old now, still loves the kiddie pool, and should be taking his next summer photo shoot in a backyard—not a shelter.

He’s not perfect. None of us are. But he is ready, he is trying, and he deserves his chance.

Do you know his unicorn?? Please share. His person is out there.
