Liberty's Story

Meet Liberty!!

This beautiful girl landed at a high-kill Houston shelter with five-day-old puppies. She was placed on the euthanasia list not once, not twice, but SIX times. Somehow, this little family kept getting another chance, and thankfully, a foster stepped up before their luck ran out.

Liberty raised her babies in the safety of a foster home, and she did her job well. Every single one of her puppies has now been adopted and is off living their best lives.

Now it’s Mama Liberty’s turn.

Liberty is a two-year-old, 40-pound Cattle Dog with a really nice medium energy level. She enjoys playing, going for walks, chewing on her favorite toys, and breaking out the occasional zoomies, but she also knows how to settle down and just hang out with her people.

And Liberty definitely loves her people. She isn’t the over the top, climb in your lap and cover your face in kisses type (which being cattle dog people ourselves we personally love about her). Instead, she’ll quietly scooch herself closer and closer until she’s right beside you, waiting for head scratches or belly rubs. She just likes knowing her people are nearby.

Liberty is potty trained and currently working on kennel training. Since her first job in foster care was raising a litter of puppies, kenneling wasn’t really part of her routine. Now that the puppies are gone, her foster has started introducing short kennel sessions and she’s doing well.

She is dog friendly and has enjoyed having canine friends, although she appreciates having her own space when food and special toys are involved. She can also get a little overly excited when she sees other dogs while on leash, so her foster is working with her on staying calm and focused during walks. She’s very food motivated, which definitely comes in handy when it comes to training!

Liberty would do best in a cat free home.

She’ll happily tag along for a car ride, although she’s probably never going to be the dog hanging her head out the window begging for a road trip. She can get a little carsick, particularly on longer drives, but she handles shorter trips well.

More than anything, Liberty is just a really nice dog. She’s playful without being wild, independent without being aloof, and affectionate without needing to be attached to you every second of the day. At only two years old, she has so much life ahead of her and is looking for someone willing to keep showing her all the things she never had the chance to learn before. She's fully ready for her best friend to share her life with.

Liberty is currently fostered in Houston, Texas, but is available for adoption nationwide. Her $600 adoption fee includes transport to her forever home. She is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm disease and will be available to transport in early October!

The first step in our adoption process is submitting an application through our rescue:
https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/DSTR/Dog
