Layla - Missouri (OT26-03)'s Story

Meet Layla - A Precious Little Girl Who Needs a Little Extra Protection

Adult only home is required due to special medical needs.

Layla is a one-and-a-half-year-old Yorkiepoo who weighs 4 lbs and who is truly as sweet as they come. This darling little girl has a gentle spirit, a heart full of love, and an absolutely wonderful personality. If there's affection being offered, Layla would very much like to be first in line!

Layla is calm, curious, and happiest when she's spending time with people who love her. She enjoys exploring her surroundings, taking in the world around her, and soaking up all the attention she can get. She's also friendly with other dogs and enjoys their company.

And while Layla is generally a calm, easygoing little sweetheart, she does have a bit of a feisty side when mealtime rolls around! Apparently, this girl takes her dinner very seriously, and she's not afraid to let everyone know it. It's just one more adorable piece of her personality.

Layla has one very important medical consideration that makes finding the right home especially important. She has an open fontanelle, and because of this, she must be adopted into an adults-only home.

An open fontanelle means that a small area of the bones in Layla's skull never completely closed as she grew. It's similar to the soft spot that human babies have on their heads. Because this area doesn't have the normal protection of bone, an accidental bump, fall, or impact to her head could cause a serious injury.

This doesn't mean Layla can't enjoy a wonderful, happy life! It simply means she needs a family who understands how important it is to protect her. Her adopters will need to handle her gently, prevent falls from furniture or being dropped, avoid rough play, and make sure her environment is safe. Any canine companions should be gentle and respectful, without roughhousing that could put her at risk.

For Layla's safety, an adults-only home is a firm adoption requirement. Even the most loving children can accidentally bump, drop, or play too roughly with a small dog, and Layla's condition makes those everyday accidents especially dangerous. Her future family must be committed to taking these precautions throughout her life and following veterinary guidance for her care.

Beyond this special consideration, Layla is simply a wonderful little girl who wants what every dog deserves-a family to love, a safe place to call home, and a lifetime of affection.

Layla may need a little extra protection, but the love she has to give is absolutely enormous. She's ready to be someone's treasured little companion, and we know the right family will see just how special she is.

Available for adoption at our Dogsville location in Humansville, MO
Apply to adopt at www.nmdr.org (select Missouri)

National Mill Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
At NMDR, we use a welcoming, conversation-based adoption process! We look at every applicant as a partner, offering honest education about our dogs' needs so you can make the best choice for your lifestyle. We generally do not deny adoptions based solely on yard size, housing type, adopter age, or having other pets. Because many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, we maintain a few firm safety and mission-aligned policies: Spay/Neuter Requirement: To help end the cycle of irresponsible breeding, all resident dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered. Homes with Children: Many of our dogs had limited socialization before rescue. Older kids are often a great match! Homes with younger children are considered individually based on the dog’s needs and the adopter’s experience with home management. Companions Only: Our dogs are adopted strictly as indoor family companions. Out-of-State Adopters: You are welcome to apply, but you must travel directly to the specific shelter housing the dog (in CO or MO) to complete the adoption. We do not ship or transport dogs. A Supportive Safety Net: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes a match isn't perfect. We discuss long-term safety nets with all adopters, and if a placement doesn't work out, we welcome our dogs back with zero judgment. Fees: Adoption fees vary by age and directly offset the extensive veterinary care, dental work, and rehabilitation each dog receives before adoption. Ready to meet your new best friend?
