Lady's Story

Hi there! I’ve had to expand my horizons to the PetFinder world. My foster mom believes it’s my best chance for finding my soulmate.

I’ll tell you what I can about my story. The rest, well, you’ll just have trust that I didn’t really have one. You see, I was born in a state that doesn’t treasure dogs like y’all do here in Michigan. So, my life was one of hardship. I’ve had many puppies in my 3-4 years of life and never really been a house pet. My buddies and I (Ricco and Suave) were finally captured from the streets and taken into the shelter. We were all scared. Ricco and I didn’t handle it well. We put up our best little dog fight, but they were bigger than us and didn’t care if we tried to bite them.

I arrived in Michigan at the end of May. I was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped before I came. I spent a few days with my foster family before a family snatched me up. In my foster family, I met my parents, their human kids, and my Malinois foster sister. I went to my forever family, or what I thought was going to be where my happily ever after happened. Fast forward six weeks….I’ve been through some things. Scary things…and unlike when I went into the shelter, this time, my small stature and big attitude got me out of it!! That’s how I got back into rescue.

My foster mom knew exactly what the issue was when she picked me up. But, she wasn’t disappointed in me, she understood. Everything. She understood why I came across as a boss babe, why I’d bite when I was scared and uncomfortable, why I’d bark and pull on the leash, and why I became the Queen of the Castle that everyone walked on eggshells around.

I may be a small terrier, but here’s where I differ from those bow wearing beauties you see on Insta. I came from the streets. I don’t know what this “pet” life is like. Things in your human world scare me. Until you teach me otherwise. Other dogs? Well, they scare me too. I’ve learned if I come across as a jerk, well, it’s less likely I get attacked or ordered around. Remember my life on the streets and never ending life of pregnancy? Yeah. I know. I come with baggage. But it’s not THAT bad. I promise, my foundation is good.

I’m in my foster mom’s house now with 3 Aussies, 1 Malinois, and 2 human kids under 10. I have met multiple people, a handful of other dogs, and gone through some fast food drive thrus. I don’t bark at the fast food people or the people I meet. Dogs- well, my foster mom doesn’t let me get away with anything…so…I’m relearning how to be a Good Samaritan to new dogs I meet. Short intros go well. If you let me square up with another small dog, left to my own devices…well, I do the typical ‘small dog trying to act big’ thing. But!! If my foster mom is there, she shows me how I need to act -as the sweet princess that she knows that I am. Sometimes she boops me on the noggin and sometimes she tugs my leash so I reset. I don’t show her any attitude back and then I make best friends with the dog I once tried to dominate over.

My foster mom has unlocked the key to my heart. She knows I need a dominate human who isn’t scared of a small dog, she bosses me around instead of the other way around, and she lets me be the sweet submissive princess that I’ve secretly needed to be all along. She has recognized that I’m a working terrier. I’m far from designer. I’ll run small prey like a border collie runs sheep. In fact! I take 4 mile walks with my Aussie and Malinois siblings and outlast them with my energy and speed! Key to my submission and helping me learn to be cool in new situations? Fill my cup with exercise first!!! Need a hiking buddy or running buddy? I know I’m small, but trust me, this body was made for sport! I’m not meant to be with a sedentary family or owner. Please don’t corrupt me anymore than I already was. If you know you’re not the right home for me, please don’t pretend to be. I know I’m cute, but I really need an owner and family that sets me up for success! And that’s one that does more than just sits home all day every day.

What do you get out of the whole deal? Me!!!!! At your side every waking moment! Ope, and every sleeping moment…because I’m stuck like glue and your bed is more cozy than mine. I’m currently crate free and free roam. I’ve learned from my Malinois sister what the house routine and rules are. I follow her everywhere. We go potty outside in our country yard, my foster mom doesn’t even have to watch us, and when she opens the door, we come right back in. This of course might not be the case in my new home, but just know, a smart, well-trained dog sibling will teach me sooo much in such a short amount of time. When my foster mom is at work I chill with my foster siblings until mom gets home. Sure, I whine and cry when she leaves, but it doesn’t ever make her come back…so, one day I should probably just save myself the hassle of even trying.

Tricks? Well, I’m getting there. I can sit and I can shake. My “heel” command and “stay” command aren’t there yet, but my foster mom knows how important they are to get on my resume.

Now before you apply:
-can you socialize me?
-can you get me all the exercise I need?
-can you sense my body language and read my cues to know when I’m scared or uncertain?
-can you step up and be the alpha?
-can you do slow dog introductions with me? Do you know what SLOW into means?
-can you give me grace if I’m not a perfect pet yet?
-do you have experience with small dog personalities?
-do you keep trying until you succeed?
-do you understand that any anxious vibes you have will become my anxious vibes?
-are you calm and determined in stressful situations?

If you answered yes to all of those, by all means, apply to take me home!!

https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/KBSC/Dog

Check out our Facebook group: KB Second Chance Dog Rescue for updated videos and photos!
