Kristoph's Story

The name is Kristoph and I am a big boy who was lucky to be saved from a bad homelife back in 2018. I was believed to be three years old at the time. I do better with the ladies and will take time warming up to the men. The male volunteers have become my buddies over time (and when properly introduced by someone I trust and bribed with biscuits). I enjoy my walks with them now that I know them. I know I'm handsome and that makes me very attractive to visitors.

Not much is known about my background. I enjoy the great outdoors and watching the birds and squirrels and nature in general. Being a big boy, I will need a tall, secure fence. Why am I still at AGPR? I am VERY protective and take my guardian role very seriously. I do not care for visitors or any of the delivery trucks. And barking is my favorite past time if there are things moving or making noise in (or outside) of my yard.

My best friend at the kennel is Winnie. We enjoy sharing the big livestock guardian yard (complete with very secure 6' fencing) and keeping the property safe. I let Winnie be the boss (it is easier that way) but she's the only one! 2021 was exciting. We got little chicks and two ducklings in the spring. Winnie was selected as the first to be trained to see if she would protect them. She did a great job. When my turn came around, there was some doubt. Do you think it was because I kept licking my lips and drooling? But, with time and patience (and some unsolicited advice from Winnie), I soon became pretty good at keeping a watchful eye on the flapping critters. We are a good team and those fowl have no worries about their safety. As our "flock", I became much busier. You can now find me laying next to their yard and intent on watching them. One of our volunteers swears I am watching the "chicken t.v. channel".

I'm very happy here at AGPR. I haven't been an easy dog to find a forever home...I'm not fond of visitors so a home with kids with visiting friends or very active and social adults wasn't the right environment for me. I also want a calm household where I can eat my meals in peace (my food is very, very important to me - just leave me alone when eating). Not sure if other household pets are going to make me happy - just not sure. I have not been a Pyr for just anyone...I needed big dog confident adults only - preferably with previous experience with dogs with my temperament. So when AGPR offered me food, shelter, love, a big yard, a BFF, and a job, I told them I wanted to stay forever.

I asked to be posted on Petfinder so everyone could see that I am happy here. I have a job and AGPR will provide me everything I need to have a healthy and safe life as long as the donations continue to support our non-profit.

All Great Pyrenees require a fenced-in yard (at least four foot high). If you have questions about the breed or our adoption policies and procedures, please go to our website at www.agprescue.org. There's plenty of good information about the breed on our website - Pyrs aren't a breed for everyone!

Our adoption application is online: http://agprescue.org/adoption-application/agpr-application-donations/

Please note that we are a small regional rescue organization. We will consider adopting to families within a four to five hour drive to Richmond, VA

Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue's Adoption Policy
We believe that any prospective owner of a Great Pyrenees should be educated about the breed and we stand behind all of our placements for the life of the dog. If you adopt a dog through AGPR, you can expect us to be there if you have any questions about the breed, if you need help, if you’re having problems, or for any reason at all. If for any reason you can’t keep your adopted dog, you must return it to the rescue. We expect all adoptive homes to an adequate physical fencing, to be able to care for a large breed of dog, to provide appropriate medical care, and to be committed to making the adoption of a rescue dog a success. Our adoption fees are $400 for adults and $450 for puppies (12 months and younger). All dogs have received medical care, are up to date on shots and are spayed/neutered and microchipped. Adoption fees go directly to our rescue fund to help pay for the health and vet treatment of previous and newly rescued Pyrs.
