Kobe's Story

Name: Kobe
Breed: Husky
Sex: Male
Age: 3 years
Weight: 50lbs

History
Kobe has spent the last 16 months at the shelter through no fault of his own. He was being held here while a court case was taking place, and because of that situation, he was unable to be made available for adoption until now.

Sixteen months is an exceptionally long time for any dog to spend in a kennel. Shelters are designed for short-term stays. During that time, Kobe's primary interactions have been with shelter staff, and he has been kenneled alongside a rotating population of other dogs. His opportunities for normal socialization have therefore been limited.

Because of his unusual circumstances, some of Kobe's current behaviors may be influenced by his prolonged stay. His future family will need to give him time to adjust to life outside of the shelter and allow him to settle into a normal routine.

Before coming to the shelter, Kobe lived with two other Huskies (one male, one female), children, and a cat. His previous experiences are encouraging, although new introductions should always be handled thoughtfully.

Personality
Kobe is a classic Husky: intelligent, independent, playful, expressive, and full of personality. He is also incredibly vocal. Kobe howls, whines, barks, groans, grumbles, and growls, and he isn't shy about sharing his opinions. He is especially grumbly when excited. If you're familiar with Huskies, you'll know that this is often just part of their unique way of communicating.

Kobe enjoys affection once he trusts you. He likes pets and being around his people, but he isn't necessarily a dog who wants to be on top of you all the time. Like many Huskies, he is affectionate on his own terms and appreciates having some independence. He has a playful and goofy side, too. Kobe likes toys, enjoys playing, and can get very excited when interacting with people. He may jump up for attention and has even been known to perch himself on someone's arm for pets!

Behavior
Kobe knows "sit"* and is mostly house trained. He enjoys his toys and has not shown a tendency to destroy his blankets. As a smart and athletic Husky, Kobe needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation. He will do best with activities that give him something to think about, such as training, puzzle toys, scent games, and other enrichment. A bored Husky can quickly find his own entertainment!

Kobe has developed some dominant behaviors in the shelter, though he may act differently once outside of the kennel environment. He previously lived with two other Huskies, so another dog may still be a possibility. His previous history with children and a cat is also encouraging. However, given how limited his socialization has been over the past 16 months, we recommend taking all new relationships slowly and giving him time to adjust.

Health
Kobe will be neutered and groomed before adoption. His adopter should be prepared for the regular grooming and coat maintenance that comes with having a Husky.

He is otherwise a dog who is ready to start the next chapter of his life. After spending so much time in a kennel, giving him time to settle into a home, establish a routine, and decompress will be important.

Kobe has waited a very long time for this opportunity. He is a wonderfully expressive Husky who deserves the chance to experience life beyond the shelter and show his family who he really is.
