Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer foster home based rescue organization.<br/><br/>MEET KILI!<br/><br/>This 4 year old sweetheart was surrendered to Pug Nation LA after the German Shepherd in his home attacked him, not once, but twice, resulting in the loss of both of his eyes. As many who have loved a blind dog know, they do not need their eyes to see. They rely on their other senses much more than we humans do and a loss of vision only heightens these senses. Kili has adapted well to the loss of sight and with some very simple accommodations he is ready to take on all the adventures that await him in his big beautiful life.<br/><br/>From his foster mom:<br/><br/>"He is a winning lottery ticket for a pug. He might not be able to see you but he is smart with his other senses already. He navigates well with noises and his name. He is a really happy go lucky dense potato pug."<br/><br/>Kili is a sweet, gentle, affectionate and curios boy. He is trusting of a kind human touch and once he knows your scent, he readily accepts loving pats, with a little verbal head's up. He is a bit wearier of males, but once he knows them, he learns to trust. We do not think placing him in a household with males will be an issue at all. Kili is friendly with other dogs despite his history of being attacked. He has learned to worship the dominant bossy princess in his foster home much like all others who enter her domain. We think Kili could benefit from a confident leader who could help him navigate the world, but he would also be ok with just his person to show him the way. It should come as no surprise that Kili is a velcro pug who is happiest when in the company of, or even better, being carried by his person. Adopter must be able to safely lift and carry 17 pounds. Kili can walk on leash, but his adopter should be mindful of the environment and work on training for stepping on and off curbs as well as awareness of other hazards. He has not been cat tested and we will consider older, dog savvy children only. Kili needs a predictable routine and environment.<br/><br/>Other favorite things; belly rubs, playing with soft toys, treats, affection and being on his person's lap, not necessarily in that order.<br/><br/>Stairways will need to be gated. Kili is good at climbing stairs and can navigate downstairs with a companion beside him. He has been great on car rides and is also crate trained.<br/><br/>Kili is still working on potty manners. He has been wearing a belly band indoors related to some marking behaviors. This may also be a way he maps out his environment. Other ways to support Kili's mapping are by using different scented oils in separate rooms. Cathy Symnd's book Blind Devotion is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about caring for a dog without vision. Potty training will be a work in progress and his adopter will need to approach with love and patience. Kili has had so much change in his life and we think he is amazing for all he has overcome! He is great for grooming and will never need eye drops, so there's that! Kili is otherwise healthy. He does take medication at night (trazadone) to help him relax as if he is startled awake; he becomes distressed and has trouble settling. This may change as Kili continues to adapt to an environment of safety.<br/><br/>We are so excited for what the future holds for this amazing dog. Our pugs will be UTD on shots and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. You must be a resident of the New England states. Due to a change in state regulations, we are no longer adopting outside of New England.<br/><br/>PRoNE is supported by adoption fees, donations and funds raised through auctions and events. Adoption fees range from $200-$1,000 which is based on age of the dog. Effective in January 2023, we have imposed a $150 Spay/Neuter Fee (if required) and a $500 Transportation Fee (For dogs requiring air/cargo travel). Pug Mixes will be discounted by $100 off the fee for their age range.
