Keena has mega-esophagus (ME) caused by something called PRAA (persistent right aortic arch). When we got her, she weighed less than 10 pounds and was basically starving to death because of her condition. She could only be fed liquid consistency food and even then she struggled to keep anything down. Shortly after coming to Mutt Misfits and before we could get her surgery underway, she became severely ill with pneumonia (a common ailment with ME). After overcoming pneumonia, in early August, Keena had surgery to correct her PRAA – the doctors untangled her heart from her esophagus, allowing her to better tolerate a more solid consistency of food. Keena’s foster mom has been working with her to see if she can tolerate dry kibble and at this point it looks like Keena may have to eat soaked kibble for the foreseeable future. With Keena being such an extreme case, her esophagus was extremely stretched; because of this, even after surgery, it will probably never go back to its normal shape. She still eats in her chair, but she is working on understanding she can hopefully one day eat on the floor like all of her foster siblings. She drinks water like a normal dog and eats small milkbone treats like a normal dog. Her mega-esophagus will always need to be monitored, but she requires no meds at this point.
Keena is doing great on potty training and kennel training. She loves going in her kennel for a treat. She LOVES playing fetch with a frisbee in the back yard! She romps and plays just like any other dog and even enjoys chewing on sticks and leaves like any puppy should!
Keena lives with dogs of all sizes and ages and does great with everyone. She has a lot of playful energy and can be a lot at first for smaller or younger dogs, but she has a very small special needs foster sibling that she has developed a great friendship with. She also has a ME foster sister that she absolutely adores!
Keena has never been around kids, but loves everyone! Keena is a very special girl that a loving and patient family would be lucky to adopt. She is fun, smart, treat motivated and loyal to her human companions.
