Kamir's Story

When he first came to us 18 months ago, he had little to no experience living in a home. He had never been house-trained, leash-trained, or crate-trained. With patience, consistency, and time, he has blossomed into a wonderful companion and has made incredible progress. He is so smart and adapts so quickly.

Today, Kamir is crate-trained and happily goes into his crate on the in command and sleeps there comfortably through the night. He is house-trained, walks well on a leash, and understands the leave it command. He also knows the sit command and will sit for his treats. He is a quiet dog who rarely barks unless he wants back inside or feels there is something important to alert us about.

Kamir is friendly, affectionate and wants endless pets and hugs. He gets along well with other dogs and animals and enjoys being around people. While we have not had the opportunity to see him interact with young children, his gentle nature suggests he would make a wonderful family companion.

Like many GSPs, Kamir loves being active. He enjoys long walks, swimming, running on our 2 acres, and playing in the snow. Because he is extremely athletic and can easily clear shorter fences, he will need a secure fenced yard with fencing of at least 8 feet tall. It is not advisable to run him off leash in a dog park or on a beach. On rainy days, he enjoys food puzzles, licker mats, and other enrichment activities that keep his mind busy.

One of Kamirs favorite things is food. He is highly food motivated and loves treats of all kinds, from vegetables to half a banana (his absolute favorite) to duck feet and beef trachea chews. At the end of an active day, he transforms into a couch potato and is happiest curled up near his people and watching TVhis favorite nighttime activity (but nothing scary).

His recall is still improving. He will come when called, but sometimes needs a moment to recognize a voice. He will oftentimes become so fixated on a scent that recall is impossible, but we found that if we walk up to him, he wants to show us what hes found, and then you can pull him off. Clapping helps get his attention, and he responds very well to positive reinforcement and treats. In fact, we named him Kamir because Come here! was the only phrase he reliably responded to when we first brought him home.

Kamirs journey has been remarkable in such a short amount of time. We are deeply heartbroken that we cannot continue to provide him with the loving home he has become accustomed to due to a job change in New York City. Moving from 2 acres to 1200 sq. ft and concrete would not provide the ideal home for a GSP. He has overcome a challenging start in life and now has another challenge of finding another loving home. He has become a loyal, loving, and well-mannered dog. He would do best with an adopter who appreciates an active breed, can provide regular exercise and enrichment, and understands that continued patience and positive reinforcement will help him keep building confidence.

If youre looking for a sweet, quiet, athletic companion who loves outdoor adventures and evening cuddle sessions, Kamir may be the perfect addition to your family.

Contact: Stephanie sssorensen71@gmail.com

Posted June 23, 2026
