Kahlua's Story

Kahlua (often called Lula) is a stunning, golden-eyed 5-year-old blue merle girl currently being fostered in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She was "retired" (surrendered, but let's be dramatic) through no fault of her own, and is now desperately seeking a permanent, high-quality couch to lounge on for the next half of her fabulous life.<br/><br/>Kahlua is affectionately known as a “dog’s dog,” which is code for: her friends with four paws come first, and her two-legged minions come second. But don’t let that slight fool you—she's loyal, but only after she's finished her important dog-business. Her absolute favorite time of day is when her humans return, allowing her the grand opportunity to greet them with a victory trophy (usually a squeaky toy, sometimes your favorite shoe, or gasp the baby’s dirty socks… whatever she can weaponize the fastest). She got a tail dock early in life due to "happy tail" (read: excessive tail-whip destruction), which resulted in the most spectacular, butt-wiggling greeting you may ever witness!!<br/><br/>Kahlua is a very independent Dane—she basically missed the memo on the "Velcro Dog" stereotype. She enjoys being in your general vicinity, maybe a few feet away, but she is not a lap dog. She provides the perfect amount of "I love you, but please, let's just do our separate things. Also, stop looking at me."<br/><br/>Some key things Kahlua requires you to know about her:<br/><br/>Kids: Yes, please!! I am loyal and gentle to even the tiniest of snack-dispensers. I love lounging next to them and making sure they are staying out of trouble (by which I mean, checking for dropped cookies).<br/><br/>Dogs: Let’s play! Males are my preferred playmates because they let me win. I love being chased by alllll the dogs at daycare—it's excellent cardio.<br/><br/>Cats: Absolutely not. Those tiny, smug beasts are too hard to catch and it frankly makes me furious. They are just miniature chaos agents.<br/><br/>FedEx Man: There is something deeply unsettling about him, and I can smell that rolling metal prison from a mile away. I’m all bark though, I promise (but shhh, don’t tell him that… he might stop leaving me treats to appease the "angry dog").<br/><br/>Dieting: I am continuing on my weight loss journey, and I resent it deeply. The food on the counter is now considered "fair game" in my survival guide. Unless it’s vegetables—healthy food is gross, you can keep that nutritional nonsense to yourself.<br/><br/>Overall, Kahlua dreams of a family with kids, who will inevitably drop food, and perhaps another dog to act as her wingman/chasing partner, though a loving, furniture-filled home is honestly enough! She still has a lot of life and love to give, so don't let that sweet, graying muzzle fool you—she's still a glorious goofball!<br/><br/>Kahlua is spayed, fully vaccinated and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $350. To read over the adoption requirements before applying, please go to www.nwflgdr.com/adopt.<br/><br/>Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters are required to pick up the dog from his or her foster.

Our adoption requirements are as follows: 1. All Dogs and Cats in your home MUST be spayed or neutered. We will call your vet to verify this. We allow exceptions in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet only. 2. All Dogs and outdoor Cats in your home MUST be current and have been kept historically up to date on annual vaccinations and monthly (or semiannual) heartworm and flea prevention. We will call your vet to verify this. We allow exceptions to this in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet, ONLY. 3. You must be a minimum of 21 years of age to adopt and be able to prove you're financially able to care for a great dane should a medical emergency arise. 4. You must own the property in which you live or your landlord must be willing to verify that you are allowed to have a Great Dane in your rental home. We check property records.? 5. Our Great Danes require a sturdy fenced in yard, particularly young or active danes. Generally, a six-foot or higher privacy fencing is preferred. In certain circumstances, the Board may waive this requirement depending upon the Dane's personality and temperament. Any such exceptions will solely be at the discretion of the Rescue Board. Under no circumstances will we consider invisible or electric fencing as acceptable. 6. We only adopt Dogs as indoor pets. We will not adopt Dogs to be used as guard dogs or to be kept out-of-doors. 7. A home visit is required for ALL adoptions, without exception. This is not a white-glove inspection, rather it is to ensure that the home is a safe environment for the Great Dane. 8. We do not transport. If you are applying from out of area or out of state, understand that if your application gets approved, you will be expected to pick up the dane in the location that he/she is being fostered. In addition, if the adoption does not work out, it is your responsibility to bring the dane safely back to us. 9. There may be multiple applications for the same Dog. Our Great Danes are placed in the home we believe most suitable for them, based upon their individual needs and temperament. 10. Before applying below, please expect this application process to take about two weeks. If you are applying from out of area or state, please expect a slight delay. It will take us more time to get the home visit set up. At any time, if you have questions about the status of your application, please email the rescue at nwflgdr@gmail.com.
