Joey's Story
Name: Joey
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier/Miniature Schnauzer Mix
Age: 10 months (born June 21, 2021)
Weight: 7 1/2 pounds
Location: Fostered in Chattanooga, TN since August, 2021 for Rescue Hearts of Alabama (volunteer and foster-based dog rescue with home base in Guntersville, AL).

Before Rescue: Joey was surrendered with his special needs brother Joe to Rescue Hearts of Alabama by someone who became overwhelmed with the cost of veterinary care. The mother dog delivered 5 puppies. One sibling died at birth and brother Joe was born with a spinal injury. Joey’s brother Joe has received physical therapy and, while his back legs do not work and he is bladder and bowel incontinent, he is thriving in foster care with Joey and has no idea he has physical limitations. Joe is also available for adoption.

Special Needs: Joey experienced an attack of Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis at 9 months of age. Fortunately, foster mom rushed him to the vet and Joe received the subcutaneous fluids, medication and attention he needed to recover. There is no known cause for Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis and it most often occurs without warning in small breed Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, and Miniature Poodles. It can cause death by dehydration and blood loss if left untreated. An attack can happen only once or it can reoccur throughout life. We are seeking an observant, responsible, experienced adopter who will watch Joey carefully and quickly provide the veterinary care he must receive any time he shows symptoms. Joey is otherwise a completely healthy, happy, active puppy.

Energy Level: Puppy energy. Active. Plays hard and naps well. As with any dog, mental enrichment and physical exercise equal a good boy.

Velcro Level: Wants to be your shadow. Champion snuggler. Loves to go for walks and wants to be included in activities.

Descriptors: Happy. Active. Silly. Intelligent. Observant. Scruffy. Wiggly. Initially shy. Bonds deeply once he gets to know his caretaker. A talker when excited.

What We Love Most: Innocence - Joey believes we are all here to give love. Sweet and submissive with other dogs. Plays in his foster home with dogs of all sizes and ages. Tries to play with cats who refuse to acknowledge him, but respectful of their personal space (the cats are larger than Joey). Playful hops and zoomies all day long. Great appetite. Treat motivated. Good boy (but wiggly) for brushing, baths, and nail trims. Excellent traveler - the puppies have been RV beach and mountain camping with foster family and resident dogs.

What Joey Loves Most: Companionship (both human and dog). Chew toys. Puzzles. Treats. Walks. Other dogs. Soft blankets. Cuddling. Good nutrition (minus any type of fish - only dog foster mom has ever known to refuse fish). Scrambled eggs and vegetables. Hanging out in the kitchen when foster mom is cooking. #souschefgoals

What We Are Working On: Jumping to ask to be picked up. Mouthiness/gentle nips when excited or overstimulated. Confidence when meeting new people. Apprehension for the sound of trimmer/clippers for grooming.

Children: Has only met older, dog-savvy children who understand small dogs must be handled gently. We do not recommend that Joey live with young children.

Crate trained: Yes. Joey and Joe share a large X-pen when unsupervised and to sleep in at night. Each has his own crate when traveling/camping.

Housebreaking: Housebroken, but does defecate in his overnight space very early some mornings. Has never had an accident outside the X-pen in the house. We go into the fenced back yard several times a day. He will go potty on leash during walks.

Ideal Home: A calm home with gentle, small dog-savvy adults who will provide daily outlets for play and exercise. Prefer a home with another dog to be Joey’s friend, but not required. A commitment to consistent, positive, reward-based training with good nutrition and responsible health care. Plenty of love and time to cuddle.

Joey’s adoption fee is $250. He is neutered (at 8 months) and microchipped, current on puppy vaccines, rabies vaccine, dewormings, flea preventative, and heartworm preventative. We require a completed adoption application which will be reviewed by our adoption team. We strive to place dogs in homes that are the best match for both the dog and the adopter(s) and take the time required to thoroughly review each application.

Please email nshdavis@live.com for an application.
