Joe's Story
Name: Joe (Jojo, Speed Racer, Speedy, Joe Bug)
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier/Miniature Schnauzer Mix

Age: 10 months (born June 21, 2021)

Weight: 8 pounds

Location: Fostered in Chattanooga, TN since August, 2021 for Rescue Hearts of Alabama (volunteer and foster-based dog rescue with home base in Guntersville, AL).

Before Rescue: Joe was surrendered with his brother Joey to Rescue Hearts of Alabama by someone who became overwhelmed with the cost of veterinary care. The mother dog delivered 5 puppies. One sibling died at birth and Joe was born with a spinal injury. Joe has received physical therapy with swimming therapy and does daily home exercises with his foster mom. Joe’s back legs do not work and he is bladder and bowel incontinent. His front legs are very strong and he is able to hold his hips up while walking and - yes - running. Joe is thriving in foster care and has no idea he has any physical limitations.

Special Needs: Yes. Joe was born with a spinal injury. His back legs do not work. Joe can be fitted with a doggie wheelchair when he has reached his full growth. Joe can do pretty much anything except climb stairs and jump onto furniture. He wears boots on his back feet when he is outside his well-padded X-pen space. The boots prevent wounds that would be caused by dragging his back feet. Joe is bladder and bowel incontinent. He must have his bladder manually emptied 5-6 times a day. Joe is strong and determined - he is also delicate and must be handled gently.

Energy Level: Happy puppy energy. Active. Plays hard. Loves to chase other dogs. Can run and play for hours without tiring. As with any dog, mental enrichment and physical exercise equal a good boy.

Velcro Level: Wants to be your shadow. Champion snuggler and lap sitter. Loves to be included in all activities.

Descriptors: Happy. Confident. Fearless. Bossy. Active. Silly. Intelligent. Observant. Scruffy. Wiggly. Shameless flirt. Never meets a stranger. A talker when excited. Neighborhood watch - this boy misses nothing.

What We Love Most: Confidence - this is Joe’s world and the rest of us are here for his pleasure. Determination. Strength. Trusting. Plays in his foster home with dogs of all sizes and ages. Energy all day long. Great appetite. Treat motivated. Excellent traveler - has been RV beach and mountain camping with foster family and resident dogs.

What Joe Loves Most: Companionship (both human and dog). Being the boss. Being held. Compliments. Chew toys. Puzzles - both treat puzzles for dogs and sitting in laps while people work puzzles (or do anything else). Treats. Running in grass. Walks (will refuse to move when he is ready to be carried). Having his ears rubbed. Other dogs. Soft blankets. Cuddling. Good nutrition (minus any type of fish - only dog foster mom has ever known to refuse fish). Scrambled eggs and vegetables.

What We Are Working On: Everything to do with grooming. Joe is excellent for baths and nail trims, but impersonates a wriggly, tantrum-throwing crocodile for brushings and trimmings. Also working on catching Joe to pick him up when he is not ready to stop playing. This little boy can easily outrun and dodge his foster mom.

Children: Has only met older, dog-savvy children who understand small dogs must be handled gently. We do not recommend that Joe live with young children.

Dogs: Loves them all.

Cats: Not recommended. Wants to chase and bark at the cats in his foster home.

Crate trained: Yes, but not housebroken because of incontinence. Joe stays in a large X-pen when unsupervised and to sleep in at night. He is accustomed to riding in a crate when he is in a car.

Housebroken: No. Joe is bladder and bowel incontinent. His bladder leaks, but does not fully empty so his bladder must be emptied manually 5-6 times a day. Joe can defecate on his own, but it happens without warning. He enjoys playing in a fenced yard several times a day, and if foster mom times it right, he will defecate while outside although he also defecates in his X-pen frequently.

Ideal Home: A calm home with gentle, small dog-savvy adults who will provide daily outlets for play and exercise. Prefer a home with a gentle, tolerant dog to be Joe’s friend, but not required. A commitment to consistent, positive, reward-based training with good nutrition and responsible health care. Plenty of love and time to cuddle, do daily physical therapy, and freedom of schedule to empty Joe’s bladder 5-6 times each day.

Joe’s adoption fee is $250. He is neutered (at 8 months) and microchipped, current on puppy vaccines, rabies vaccine, dewormings, flea preventative, and heartworm preventative. We require a completed adoption application which will be reviewed by our adoption team. We strive to place dogs in homes that are the best match for both the dog and the adopter(s) and take the time required to thoroughly review each application.

Please email nshdavis@live.com for an application. ***********Please, serious inquiries only*****************
