Jay's Story

Jay is the kind of puppy who makes you smile for many reasons. Born in mid-December 2025, this 20# Border Collie is lots of things! Cuddly companion, curious explorer, and busy helper involved in everything his people are doing. Attentive, affectionate, and eager to engage, Jay keeps a close eye on his humans and loves connecting with them.<br/><br/>This sweet pup loves toys, treats, and any opportunity to go do anything. Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, a car ride, or a visit to meet new friends who will offer pets and attention, Jay is ready to tag along. He appreciates people who respect his gentle nature and let him approach on his own terms. Once he feels comfortable, he’s incredibly loving and happy to enjoy lots of attention.<br/><br/>Jay has a medium energy level and wants a calmer home with an active family that enjoys daily walks, playtime in the yard, and spending quality time together. He’s a thoughtful learner who responds beautifully to positive reinforcement training. Because he’s a soft, sensitive dog, he will thrive with a focus on encouragement and building confidence. In return, Jay will do his best to make you happy and receive praise or a reward.<br/><br/>He walks nicely on leash and shows excellent check-in behaviors. He sleeps soundly in his crate at night, travels well in the car (crated), and is learning house training skills - he's almost got it down! A schedule and consistency will help him master the routine. Jay can be a little mischievous too (as he should be!). Shoes and household items may occasionally become “toys” if left unattended.<br/><br/>Jay wants a Border Collie experienced family - he demonstrates traits of the breed (stalking, chasing and intensity). He would love a canine sibling to show him the ropes – he adores his foster canine sister! He currently lives with a cat and ignores her. He can live with low-key herding dog-savvy kids who will respect his tender heart and understand how to handle herding behaviors.<br/><br/>If you’re looking for a devoted, sensitive puppy who wants to learn, cuddle, and be your constant sidekick, Jay may be your perfect match.<br/><br/>APPLY to adopt Jay at hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt<br/><br/>Jay is being fostered in Duluth, MN.<br/><br/>Jay's adoption fee is $550 + MN sales tax. He is microchipped and up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. He will be neutered when he reaches 6 months of age. The cost of this procedure is included in his adoption fee. Upon adoption, all of our dogs go to their new homes with a collar and harness, leash, starter food, blanket, favorite toys & treats. They are current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.<br/><br/>As a foster-based rescue, we do not have a central facility to visit. Meet and greets with specific dogs are arranged once your adoption application (not an inquiry through Petfinder) has been received, processed, and approved. We are located in Minnesota and adopt to an area 400 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Heart of a Border Collie Rescue's Adoption Policy
Please read 'Do You Have What It Takes' on our website (www.hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt) before applying to adopt a dog through our rescue. You may also find information about Border Collies helpful (www.hoabcr.org/border-collie-info). Steps in our adoption process include: 1) Filling out an application. Taking this step indicates you are truly interested in adopting a dog - it is not binding. 2) If your application meets the requirements for the dog you're interested in, it will be screened through an initial interview with one of our volunteers. If your application does not meet the requirements, you will not be contacted. 3) If we determine your home could be a good fit for one of our dogs, we will complete reference and vet checks, and set up a home visit, which may occur in person or virtually. 4) If approved, details about your application are sent to the foster that has the dog that you're interested in. If the foster feels you are a match for their foster dog, they will call you to talk in detail about the dog, and possibly move to an in-person meeting. Meetings are allowed AFTER applications are fully approved as described above. 5) If that dog is not deemed to be a good match, we may suggest another dog for you, or your application will be kept on file for a potential future dog. 6) Adoption is complete with payment and a signed adoption contract. Our adoption fees are specified in individual Petfinder listings. The fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm and Lyme tests, rabies & distemper & Bordetella vaccinations (if old enough). Our dogs go to their new homes with a collar, harness, leash, rescue ID tag, starter food, toys and blanket. We are required to charge appropriate MN sales tax.
