Jasper's Story

If sweetness were a sport, Jasper would be undefeated. This totally deaf dog since birth is a happy boy. What he does need is structure, routine, a knowledgeable owner to guide him.

Jasper is about 3.5 years old (estimated DOB 7/20/2022) and was born deaf — but you’d never know it watching him enjoy living. He can roll with the world just like any other dog, under proper guidance. He does need to understand limitations meaning, you, his owner, is the alpha. Jasper was released to us because he started to lunge at the husband. Jasper was allowed on the cough and beds. He was allowed to do what he wanted. What happened? He started to decided on his own what was right and wrong? No boundaries? We're not sure. We have no knowledge of him biting, he has not bit anyone at the shelter. So for us to adopt him to a new home, he will need some training with you and we use Canine Cooperative (Jaimee & Sabrina) We certainly will pay for at least the first training session. This pup really has a lot of great qualities and if you have interest in adopting a deaf dog, he could be your next best friend!

At outdoor school events (per his last owner), he was the star of the show — kids and adults lined up to pet him, and he soaked up every second of it.

Being deaf doesn’t slow Jasper down — but it does mean his future family will need to stay mindful to keep him safe and be willing to learn how to communicate with him. Deaf dogs are incredibly capable, smart, and bond deeply with their people. With consistency and positive training, they absolutely shine.

Jasper is:
✔️ Good with kids (10+)
✔️ Good with other dogs (when out and about - not in the home)
✔️ A certified love bug

We currently have him on a diet to help him lose a few pounds for his long-term health — he’s taking it like a champ.

Please remember ALL dogs and cats once adopted need time to decompress in your home. Focus on creating a calm, safe, and structured environment to help them adjust. Take it slow. This gives you time to get to know their true personality, plus for them to get used to their new home and routine.

Stop by to fill out an adoption application and spend as much time as you like with our dogs. Please call your veterinarian to permit them to speak with us for our vet check. If you rent, bring proof (lease/contract) that you are allowed to have a dog. If you have a dog at home, two meet-and-greets are required to make sure they seem compatible. We offer a free session with our trainer, Canine Cooperative, once an adoption is finalized. Ask us about it!!

Our adoption fee is $150 for dogs. This includes heartworm and Lyme testing, flea/tick preventatives, deworming, age-appropriate vaccines, and spay/neuter if six months or older.

For more info on our shelter and available pets, check us out online:

(973) 728-2859
Visiting Hours:
Mon - Fri: 10a - 1p
Wed eve: 7:30p - 9p
Sat -Sun: 10a - 3p
