Jane's Story

Jogging with Jane !! As one of our volunteers puts it... This girl, now that she's not shy any longer, loves to be on the move during her walks... Jane came to us with Cade, her brother in the beginning of October. They are Shar-Pei/Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed young dogs. At two years old, Jane is coming out of her shell after being very shy, frightened when first arriving. She is more curious, trusting and starting to sniff around, has interest in the volunteers. She likes belly rubs too! Jane can be adopted to a family with kids 14+ y/o and into a home with another dog. The dogs need to have two meet-and-greets at the shelter to see how they get along. We do not know about cats. She's a tad overweight which with more exercise and care, she will shed those pounds to be healthier. As days pass, Jane is learning that she is being cared for and no need to feel worried or scared of us. We are enjoying getting to know her personality. Could this cutie be right for your family?

Please remember ALL dogs and cats once adopted need time to decompress in your home. Focus on creating a calm, safe, and structured environment to help them adjust. Take it slow. This gives you time to get to know their true personality, plus for them to get used to their new home and routine. Thank you!

Stop by to fill out an adoption application and spend as much time as you like with our dogs. We do not adopt first come; we always select the best placement for our animals. Please call your veterinarian to permit them to speak with us for our vet check. If you rent, bring proof (lease/contract) that you are allowed to have a dog. If you have a dog at home, a meet-and-greet will be scheduled for the second visit. We offer a free session with our trainer, Canine Cooperative, once an adoption is finalized.

Our adoption fee is $150 for dogs. This includes heartworm and Lyme testing, flea/tick preventatives, deworming, age-appropriate vaccines, and spay/neuter if six months or older. If they are too young, we require a $50 deposit that will be refunded upon proof that the pet has been altered.

For more info on our shelter and available pets, check us out online:

West Milford Animal Shelter Society
Lycosky Drive, West Milford, NJ 07480
(973) 728-2859

Visiting Hours
Mon - Fri: 10a - 1p
Wed Night: 7:30p - 9p
Weekends: 10a - 3p
