Iris's Story
Animatch is going to be completely honest. Unless you have the time, patience, and determination to see this adoption through, Iris is not the dog for you. This is not a “try and see” situation. Iris has never known the comfort of a real home, never had someone truly care for her, and never experienced what it means to simply be a beloved family dog.

Progress may take weeks. It may take months. But if you are willing to stay committed, the reward will be knowing that you changed the course of a life that has known very little kindness.

There is no sugar-coating Iris’s past. She and two other Standard Poodles now in our care were part of a seizure carried out by Humane World for Animals Canada. Cruelty and neglect exist everywhere — even close to home. Iris, along with many other dogs, was living in horrific conditions surrounded by overwhelming filth, urine, and feces. The dogs themselves carried the same smell because there had been no proper care for so long. For the poodles, that neglect also meant severe matting and painful coats that had clearly been ignored for far too long.

When help finally arrived, Iris didn’t understand she was being rescued. All she knew was fear. No one had ever come to help her before.

Iris required sedation just to be groomed. While she must have felt relief afterward, emotionally she remained terrified. Every day she takes small steps forward, but she still has a long journey ahead of her.

Animatch hopes that one day Iris will discover how to simply be a dog — to relax, to trust, maybe even to play. But even if she never fully becomes that carefree dog, we will still consider her story a success if she spends the rest of her life safe, clean, loved, and protected. If you have ever wanted to truly make a difference in a dog’s life, this is your opportunity. Iris does not need perfection. She needs patience. She needs understanding. Most of all, she needs someone willing to give her the time she has never been given before.

If you can accept that healing may take weeks or months, then you may be exactly the person Iris has been waiting for.
