Hunter's adopter must be from the Denver area and have a fenced yard. He needs a family of experienced dog owners who have the patience and skills to look, listen, and learn. He must be an only dog! Hunter is 6-years old and will need a few gradually increased visits in the potential adoptive home prior to adoption. He has taught me that he can be alright with both men and women if they allow him to be slow, and to have time to really gather his senses and access a new situation. Because Hunter is timid, he does not like to be reached for or approached suddenly and might try to bite if he is approached in this manner. He needs to know what is going to happen before it happens. We can only guess what happened to Hunter is his past to have instilled some fears. Since he came to my foster home, I have witnessed Hunter go from cautious, apprehensive, insecure, and protective to calm, trusting, gentle and relaxed - as long as he understands what is going to happen AND as long as he does not have to deal with other dogs. Hunter will bark loudly at first meeting, and maybe even the second meeting. Once he has been allowed the time and space to settle and begin to feel comfortable, he will soften, attach, and seek close attention. He has shown that he can be a loyal companion, but he must feel his way first. He does have some territorial tendencies toward food and possessions. Hunter seems able to go back and forth between the woman and man in the home, either lap is fine, but he has really taken favor to the man of the house. Hunter has not been tested with or exposed to cats. Please, no children for this dog. A fenced yard is a must! Hunter loves to be outdoors watching the birds, squirrels, and going on a backyard chase.
