HOT DOG!!!

ATTENTION TRI-POD LOVERS!!!<br/><br/>Hot Dog, is waiting to make your acquaintance. <br/><br/>We took this little pint sized dynamo in, after his elderly owner became to compromised to care for him. Family members were not able to take him in so we were called and we just could not say no to that adorable face.<br/><br/>Do NOT let that adorable face fool you though. Oh sure, he is very sweet and loves a good lap snuggle session but he is also just full of fun and personality and would adore a toy box, packed to the rafters in toys. It doesn't matter what kind. This guy loves them all. Squeaky. Stuffed. Animated. Crackly. Fetchable and every other kind you can think of. He love love loves, chasing balls and will even throw them for himself. He especially loves toys he can shake the heck out of, while pretending he is an apex predator who just nabbed a worthy prey. Then, when the fun is over, his next favorite thing, is to snuggle up next to you on the couch, for a good book read or binge session on Netflix.<br/><br/>Hot Dog is around 3-5 years old, weighs around 9 lbs and is longer than tall. He has an easy care, short, smooth coat that will just need a nice soft brush going over now and then, to keep him looking sleek and shiny. He is crate trained, does great on a leash, though loves to lead, rather than follow, is a great little traveler, is pretty much housebroken, but in a new home, may have an accident or two, while figuring out the new routine. He has the prey drive of both breeds, firmly intact so will keep your yard clear of small trespassers, as a point of pride. It is hilarious to let him out and watch him launch himself out into the yard, in full on Navy Seal mode, until he is satisfied, all the unwanted intruders have been scared away. He also has a very kind and gentle side that we feel could make a very nice therapy dog, for children's hospitals or nursing homes. He would feel very important about this duty.<br/><br/>So why is he he a tri-pod? <br/><br/>When we first took Hot Dog in, we noticed that he would oftentimes hold up his left rear leg, while moseying around the yard. We suspected a luxating patella, so brought him in for x-rays only to discover a very misshapen hip socket. Our vet team could not determine the cause. It could have been an old, untreated injury or a genetic defect but whatever it was, it was painful and would not right itself with time so we elected to have him undergo FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) a procedure that removes the femoral head so that surrounding muscles will form a new socket and remove the painful bone on bone contact of before. However, once our vet got into the hip joint, she discovered a very compromised femoral bone. She described it as something she had never seen before, where the bone seemed to be in some stage of decay. Healthy bone, when removing the femoral head, cuts clean but Hot Dog's bone, splintered and cracked. She proceeded with the surgery but only time would tell if the bone would respond by healing or if it would continue to decay. Unfortunately, it did not heal and Hot Dog was now ALWAYS on three legs with his fourth, painful and not healing so the decision was made to remove it entirely. Hot Dog, recovered beautifully and, already being used to living on just three legs, never looked back. He runs, he plays with his toys, he goes on easy walks and car rides and is an all around, happy little man. It will be VERY important, that his weight be managed and his figure kept slim. Given his longer back and missing rear leg, carrying extra weight will not be his friend. If you tend to overfeed, perhaps he is not the dog for you.
