Honey's Story

This lady was found walking alone down a busy road in Sanford. Her finder thought she looked overbred & dumped, so they brought her home to St. Cloud and tried to rehome her. They decided to list her on Facebook Marketplace, where we saw the ad. I reached out & asked if she had even been checked for a microchip yet to attempt reuniting with a possible owner. The couple said no & still almost rehomed her to a family member before agreeing to release her to the rescue.

I picked her up late at night & noticed several signs of illness that did suggest possibly being dumped or lost for a while. Its just so difficult to comprehend how a loved/owned dog could be outside for so long to get to these conditions in the middle of a busy city. Regardless we have to always give the benefit of the doubt! Honey was scanned and she DOES have a microchip! However the owner never registered their information. We contacted the microchip company, the issuing clinic, and attempted to have them contact the original breeder, yet no owner could be traced. We filed the "found pet report" with the proper county, searched lost pet posts across several counties, and even reached out to Bulldog specific rescues. No reports close to this poor girl. Shes been kept under stray hold now for over a month and she's ready to find an adoptive family.

We began treatment right away for ear infections & eye infection. She has "cauliflower ear" on both ears, signs of previous hematomas likely from past infections going untreated. Her ears were pretty gunky but not cracked or painful and they did clear up pretty easily. Her coat is pretty great for the breed. She has noticeable yeast near the front legs but no dryness, hot spots, or hairloss. Shes very patient with her cleanings! Does not enjoy the wrinkles on her face being touched but she just gives resistance, no aggression. She loves the top of her head being pet & her fur is super healthy / soft!!

It was apparent when we got home the first night that she suffers partial vision loss. She appears to have 1 eye with a slight cataract & the other with more severe damage. The worse eye has been very stubborn to clear up from the infection. She does bump into some things in low lighting. Shes a little clumsy but she's a kind, gentle dog. After settling in I noticed that she appears deaf too. If she is resting behind a gate & I walk quietly into the room (not stomping so she cant feel the vibration) she doesnt look up to notice me like a normal dog would. She sniffs the air if I linger for a minute, looks up, and starts wagging her tail. The fact that she allows ear drops with zero reaction indicates a likelihood that she has been deaf her entire life. She seems really well adjusted & even seemingly responds to "sit" if she's watching you say it. After a while of observation it appears as though she may be able to hear certain tones when she's awake & alert.

Honey is good with other dogs & mostly ignores the cat. She doesn't like being crated but will go in if you insist. She's somewhat potty trained but will have an accident inside if she doesnt get let out every 4-5 hours or more. She holds it for a while & often makes it overnight without accident but she does have an accident inside if you dont let her out right away when you wake up, sleep too late, or if she's had too much water. She seems very eager to be a "good girl" and follow rules though for somebody who can be understanding of an old girls bladder! She would do best in a low activity level home where she can free roam to follow her people, keep an eye on you, and not have multiple family members surprising her from different directions. If I walk into the kitchen she will park herself at the back of the room so she's out of the way, able to watch me, and see the entrance to the room at the same time. She would probably be good with older kids (hasnt been tested with kids) but would likely be overwhelmed with multiple kids.

Honey has now been updated with vaccines & heartworm prevention, spayed, and microchip ready for new owner transfer. Her adoption fee to cover vetting & care is $550.
