Meet Hercules! This loveable, affectionate big boy is looking for his forever home! It's been said that he's basically a Golden Retriever in the body of an 80lb Alaskan Malamute. Hercules is currently in a transitional period of his life where he has had to hit the "reset" button. Prior to coming to the Island, he was kept predominantly outside for most of his life, and consequently was under socialized in certain aspects. However, in the past few months he has shown that he can bond with his special person deeply and is incredibly sweet and intuitive. He is working hard on his good boy manners and has come such a long way in a short period of time! His next person will need to be willing to continue to work with him on things like confidence building, trust, alone time, leash walking, and how to politely meet new dogs. While he is still learning about other dogs, he LOVES people and isn't afraid to make new human friends!
Hercules is currently living with another dog and two cats. He is respectful of the resident dog and is working hard on cohabitating with another species, however we think he would do best in a no cat household. Hercules would benefit from living with a confident, friendly dog to keep him company while his human is away and assist with his confidence building. He isn't the most playful dog, so therefore he would prefer a mellower companion. Years of jumping up and down in a backyard has given this poor, young dog some signs of early arthritis. His new people will need to make sure to feed him a quality diet and exercise him appropriately to his comfort level and ability.
Even though Hercules has had a rough start, he hasn't let his love for humans falter. He still has all the potential in the world to be someone's wonderful companion and best friend. His current person is even willing to help bridge him over to his new home, so the adjustment period isn't so drastic. If you would like to know more about this sweet boy and get connected to his current people for a meet and greet, please reach out to the APS-FH Shelter Manager, Beth at manager@apsfh.com for more information.
